An afternoon out & about on Chicago’s North Side

Last month I had a few hours to spare one afternoon before I needed to head to O’Hare for my flight back to the West Coast. So I opted to walk around Uptown, Edgewater (including Andersonville), Ravenswood, and Lincoln Square. This is where I lived before moving away a few years ago and these four neighborhoods are where I spent a large majority of my time. I think they’re great and was happy to have some time to spend in these areas once again. An added bonus was the sunshine to start!

1. Andersonville

7. Making my way eastward towards the lakefront through East Andersonville. I LOVE all of this brick. These types of neighborhoods in Chicago make me love this city.

10. This section of elevated track is currently being completely rebuilt.

11. Arriving at the lakefront near Foster Ave Beach.

12.

13.

14. High-rises in the Edgewater Beach area.

15. Pedestrian underpass beneath Lake Shore Drive.

16. Heading into the Bryn Mawr Historic District.

17.

18.

19.

20. The new elevated guideway for the red & purple lines at Bryn Mawr Ave. Admittedly they look rather sizeable though hopefully once buildings are constructed next to the tracks they’ll help mask just how large the elevated structure is compared to the old viaduct & overpass.

21.

22. Heading back west through East Andersonville.

23.

24.

25. Back along Clark Street in Andersonville.

26.

27.

28. An old hospital recently converted into residential… this is actually where Hillary Clinton was born.

29. Into Ravenswood.

30.

31. One of my go-to coffee shops before I moved away a few years ago.

32.

33. Winnemac Park in the northern Lincoln Square area.

34.

35. Heading through the residential areas of Lincoln Square towards Lincoln Ave.

36.

37.

38. More fantastic brick!

39.

40.

41. Arriving at Giddings Plaza along Lincoln Ave in the heart of Lincoln Square.

42.

43.

44.

45.

46.

47.

48.

49.

50. A little glimpse further down Lincoln Ave where the neighborhood changes from Lincoln Square to North Center.

51. Making my way east along Montrose Ave back towards Ravenswood.

52.

53.

54.

55.

56.

57. Moving into the Sheridan Park area of Uptown.

58.

59.

60.

61. Wilson CTA station ahead.

62. The core of Uptown, stretching from near Montrose up to Lawrence.

63.

64.

65.

66.

67.

68.

69. Sigh, the Uptown Theatre, which continues to sit dilapidated and vacant, despite a triumphant announcement during the Rahm Emanuel mayorship that funding had been secured for its rehabilitation back to its former glory. I’ve been disappointed over the years at various skyscraper developments falling through (example the Chicago Spire), but the continued failure to bring this amazing theatre back to life probably frustrates me the most. Check out these photos of the interior!

70. Continuing north up Broadway through northern Uptown.

71. Asia on Argyle, just east of Broadway centered on the Argyle red line station.

72. More residential development occurring along Broadway on previously underutilized lots… great to see the continued infill!

73. And now back into the residential area of East Andersonville north of Foster Ave (meaning Edgewater rather than Uptown). I love brick, but I also love Chicago’s graystones!

74.

75.

76.

77.

78.

79.

80.

81.

82.

83.

84.

85.

86. And concluding my walkabout back along Clark Street in Andersonville.

87.

88.

89.

90.

91.

92. Time to fly back to San Francisco.

And that’s all from my afternoon out & about on Chicago’s North Side. Hope you enjoyed it!

Great tour! Thanks for sharing. It's always nice to see other smaller scaled, but still urban and walkable neighborhoods in other cities.
