San Francisco: Presidio Tunnel Tops

San Francisco's newest waterfront park, and a nice example of a freeway/tunnel cap. 14 acres in the Presidio, which is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (total 82,116 acres). Crissy Field used to be separated from the Presidio by Doyle Drive. As part of the project to replace the seismically unsafe elevated freeway, they built concrete tunnels instead, connecting San Francisco to the Golden Gate Bridge, and placed this park on top. This new park provides a beautiful transition from the Presidio down to the Crissy Field Marsh at sea level. Over 200,000 native and drought-tolerant plants were planted, and once mature, should make the park even more attractive.

The Outpost - a nice playground with really nice use of reclaimed wood. Glad to see these trees receive a new life.

These benches were probably my favorite feature. Really comfy too! Perfectly contoured for relaxing.

The end!

Nice! Maybe I'll check it out the next time I'm in SF!

Interesting photos, it looks like it will be nice when the landscaping matures. The Presidio must be valuable to the city, a bit like Vancouver's Stanley Park geographically, but even larger at 2.58 sq mi. compared to Stanley Park's 1.56 sq mi..

Cool street furniture. More cities should take note.

Love it, that is super cool! Once all the landscaping matures it will be very different...

Looks like an interesting park. Is there any platform along the park to provide uninterrupted views of the Golden Gate Bridge, with no parkland in the foreground?

Yeah! It's a nice little chill getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Indeed. The landscaping is a bit sparse right now but that's not surprising since the seedlings were just planted not too long ago.

Not that I could tell from my short visit, at least from the Tunnel Tops portion of the Presidio. You could go down to Crissy Field, or there are other places in the Presidio a short walk from this area where you could probably have uninterrupted views of the bridge though. There's another tunnel top park (Battery Bluff Park) that has views of the bridge, but you'd still see the NOAA Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary in the foreground and part of Crissy Field.
