I'm trying to figure out if the unique apartment is still standing. Does it look familiar to anyone?
It looks like 209 N Venice Boulevard. Some of the details are missing, but it's still standing. One of the property websites gives a build date of 1914, so about nine years after the original canals were built.

His posts from cars driving down the roads back in the old days were good, like Wilshire etc. This should be a friendly gathering, although of course people can disagree about things as long as it stays civil and doesn't go off the track. Of course this is ethereal's popular and excellent forum, so it is his call about rules for his long time blog with millions of visits and thousands of pages of posts. Maybe avoiding controversy is a good idea here, a refuge from the sorry state of the world.

I grew interested in this hill--or should I say "bluff"--and poked around it a little. Near its summit, on the other side of the house in the above, is a street called Academy Street, which is one of L.A.'s steepest:

LA Times, 2/27/1986

Trying to find out (unsuccessfully) why it was called "Academy Street," I found this about one of its denizens:

LA Times, 3/10/1927; sorry it's rather small

whose house on Academy was here:

gsv

Note the grade.

Not long before his accident, he had already been in the papers as a player in what was evidently a football game between the Police Dept. and the Fire Dept.:

LA Times, 1/9/1927

But things turned out OK for Evans. It appears that his leg was not amputated, and that he had years of service in the Fire Department. What is more, he got married:

LA Times, 4/12/1930

And his wife was somewhat prominent in later years in the local PTA.

But . . . I still don't know why it's called Academy Street.

Good sleuthing, Noir Noir.

So you found the location with this tiny clue! (circled, below)

I'm in awe.

Thanks Hoss. I'm glad it's still standing. .and. .I hope it's protected.

I would guess that an Arts & Craft apartment building is relatively rare.

I believe there is at least another one near the Wilshire District but I don't remember the exact address.

I also noticed Doug was missing.

In the old days, he had something of a reputation for disappearing from time to time. I just chalked it up to his somewhat mercurial personality. I too am happy to know he is well.

Edit: My bad! While I am glad Doug is okay my memory was of another longtime poster who seems to be missing also. Apologies. Carry on.

The fireman Evans was still there in April 1937, when he got a permit for the addition you see projecting to the left from the house in the above. Perhaps his family was growing!

The one who uses the Richfield tower as his avatar? I haven't seen him post for a while either. People here do notice missing posters and wonder if all is OK. We used to share our memories on how great the departed Richfield tower was, especially at night with the oil derrick spire all lit up. The number of people who saw the Richfield in its glory is dwindling. Been demolished for almost 54 years, and the spire probably not lit for 55.

If anybody remembers when the Hollywood sign was "Hollywoodland", I'd be amazed. Might by as well be memories of President Teddy Roosevelt or Honest Abe or Augustus Caesar for that matter.

We lived at 5428 Monroe Street, about two blocks east of Paramount Studios. We could see the Hollywood sign from the corner of our street at Wilton Place and thus I looked at it every morning when I walked north on Wilton to school. The letters for 'Hollywood' stood upright, if a bit weather beaten. Just to the right of the sign you could clearly see 'land' lying back in the weeds. If you squinted your eyes just right you could make it look as all one sign. Little kids do these kinds of things. This would be in about 1948-49.

I also remember the Richfield tower in all it's glory.

I believe this is CBD, from the comments to the YouTube clip....

Suggest that it may be time to remove the ban....I've noted the periodic feuds, but Doug has contributed so many insightful, and often colorful, posts to the thread....that should be acknowledged.

If I remember correctly he had a bit of tragedy in his life. He could be quite insightful and maybe posed something of a challenge but, all in all, I didn't find him objectionable. I hope there's still room for him around here.

(My 0.02 cents)

Have we seen this already?

"Circa 1938. People walk down the stairs from the retail entrance to the Sears building in Boyle Heights." (Herman J Schultheis Collection)

LAPL

I'd love to have my car lubed while I shop at Sears and save.

You may be thinking of Scott Charles. He showed up and became an instant contributor with great stories and graphics skills.
If my memory is correct, he got involved in a little feud with CBD and abruptly left.

I will say that I would like to see Scott Charles return and leave it at that.

cleaned up 'imperfections' on images he was posting? Very skillful. And kind of tedious work. Sorry to hear he's disappeared.

Scott Charles posts (rarely) from time to time. The one who disappeared is BifRayRock after I wrote that "he would never learn to not post a bunch of photos in one post". I'm sorry.

I was going to stay out of these comments of late, but... No, he has not posted since he left.

Scott Charles has not posted since Nov. 2020. And Bristolian is correct as to why he left. I actually sent him a PM a few months later asking him to consider returning here. Whether he read it or not I don't know, but he has not returned.

As for CBD, whereas I often did like his input, he greeted me in a PM when I first posted here and made me feel welcome, but he did become argumentative with some posters, more so over time, and to our esteemed moderator as well when he'd ask him to stop. So, I cannot say his banishment was not unwarranted. He was asked to stop and did not.
___

(In riichkay's post you notice that CBD's response to the youtube video has two replies? The moderator of the comments has removed those replies...they don't show up. You have to admit, CBD does tend to get some people riled up.)

I miss NoirCityDame, who disappeared several years ago. She posted a lot of family photos showing LA life as it was lived in the era. Anybody know what became of her?

My apologies. I mistook Scott Charles for JScott (Los Angeles Past).
