I grew interested in this hill--or should I say "bluff"--and poked around it a little. Near its summit, on the other side of the house in the above, is a street called Academy Street, which is one of L.A.'s steepest:

Trying to find out (unsuccessfully) why it was called "Academy Street," I found this about one of its denizens:

Not long before his accident, he had already been in the papers as a player in what was evidently a football game between the Police Dept. and the Fire Dept.:

But things turned out OK for Evans. It appears that his leg was
not amputated, and that he had years of service in the Fire Department. What is more, he got married:

And his wife was somewhat prominent in later years in the local PTA.
But . . . I still don't know why it's called Academy Street.
