I took the Orange Line in from Midway this morning. The new UNO charter school on 51st is looking sick. Unfortunately I could not get a good shot of it before the train descended behind a warehouse.

Hayward, that's you guys, right? Any recent pictures you can share?

RIP Doug Garofalo - a great architect (via Blair Kamin):

Chicago architect Doug Garofalo dies

The following is a statement from Robert Somol, director of the architecture school at the University of Illinois at Chicago:

An article in crains discussing development in Wicker Park. I'm happy to hear plans stirring up again for conversion of the Coyote building into a hotel, something it should have been many years ago. If it ever does, I'll get a room just to get a view.

There’s definitely a need for a hotel here- reminds me of the Days Inn at the Diversey/Clark/Broadway intersection (which is always booked, I believe). I’m surprised it’s taken this long.

Aside from the cell phone outfit on the ground floor, who are the other current occupants? I walk the EL bridge @ the Coyote over North ave every day, and it looks more or less vacant.

Hotel would be cool.

Not as excited about a frickin' Walgreens in the bank building across the street. I guess it's better than a vacant building, but I thought there were more interesting plans afoot not that long ago.

Wow, that is all pretty good news for the area. Will the other walgreens just southeast on Milwaukee close?

I doubt it- it's a good 3-4 blocks away, and there seems to be an insatiable appetite for Walgreens in the area. If you go 4 blocks the other way, there's one there. 4 blocks west....another Walgreens. According to this pattern, expect another to pop up @ Ashland & North any day now.

I doubt Walgreens will do anything like this. Would be nice if they did! This is a new CVS also in Wicker Park

God I really dislike Walgreens and CVS....but at least in the case of the CVS we have adaptive reuse & their store at Damen / Lawrence is not an outright assault in city living so for that they get to reside in a canto of hell several above the abysmal Walgreens.

I really want to ban walgreens from the city

Here are some answers to the questions.

The original Northwest Tower Bldg hotel idea floundered because it was put together by a nitwit developer. The plan was pretty much a just a vague concept. To make thing worse, this developer had come to the conclusion that he never actually needed to sell the condos he built. He could just refinance them endlessly.
One month after he got a special use from the ZBA for the hotel, the foreclosures started to rain down.
The hotel is a swell idea but whoever does it better get on the stick. The special use expires in October.

The Noel State Bank project that pip remembered was from Walgreens.
They wanted it kept on the QT. The giant W sign was the only giveaway.
Their plan was to keep most of the historic interior.
Their plan also included enlarging the windows, (in their cold war with CVS, they were afraid of a bank window gap), landmarks put the kibosh on that.
They also said they planned to keep the other store on Milwaukee open.

As for the ATT store and Caribou coffee, who cares. That is just the sort of stuff you expect to see. They come and go.

It's really pretty dynamic - appropriate for a soccer academy.

I hope the grey color on the left is the final cladding, though... I'm not necessarily a fan of the sheet metal cladding. It almost looks quilted.

^^^ None of it will be visible once the new store is constructed. It will cover most of those windows and the rest you won't be able to see over the parapet of the new building.

That doesn't quite explain it; if the windows are above the parapet level, they would still have views out. The reason they bricked up past the parapet level of New Burberry is because of fire code (a fire in Burberry could send flames shooting up to shatter the windows higher up).

At the same time, I always thought the code was generous enough to allow window openings that aren't fire rated between two buildings (is it 3 feet or more?). Considering a friend of mine had a fire spread to their apartment in a building 5 stories below, and 5 feet from the property line.

Oh well, the folks in that building won't want views of the mechanical on the roof anyway.
