^ I guess now that FC Edmonton is gone, Valour is the basketcase of the CanPL. How hard can it be to turn this thing around?!

IG field just is too big a venue for them need to expand waverly soccer complex to 5000 seats or renovate uofm Bison pan am stadium as its natural grass and 5000 seats. Maybe playing in a regional league against teams in the upper Midwest u.s. would work better to save on travel costs. Bombers currently lose $950 k per year owning valour.

Is the venue really the issue in terms of the team's competitiveness, though? Some of the other teams in the league seem to be doing just fine with rickety porta-stadiums. If Valour was winning games, then the crowds would be there and atmosphere would be fine.

Waverley Soccer Complex and Pan Am Stadium are useless for CanPL and would be a huge downgrade from IG Field. The only viable alternative would be building a new stadium from the ground up, and there would be no political appetite to fund that. Besides, it's likely the case that Valour exists in large part as a way to help WFC get more event dates at IG Field.

Valour's home opener is tomorrow... it'll be 3 degrees at most with snow on the ground. Kickoff right after the Jets playoff game. In a week where Valour made history by losing to a semi-pro team in the Canadian championship. I sure hope the Valour FC ticket account executives are up to a challenge... otherwise there might be fewer than 500 people there.

Sorry I meant soccer team not just "team".

Inter Milan closing in on the signing of Club Brugge star Tajon Buchanan
Football Today April 27 2023

Inter Milan are closing in on their first signing of the summer after reaching an agreement for Club Brugge prospect Tajon Buchanan, as per Belgian outlet HLN .

The Nerazzurri have struck a verbal agreement with the Belgian giants for Buchanan worth around €15 million.

The Canadian international has been excellent for Brugge this season, growing into an integral member of the side with 28 appearances in all competitions.

The 24-year-old has also attracted wider attention following his impressive World Cup campaign in Qatar.

Buchanan has been viewed as a replacement for right wing-back Denzel Dumfries, although the Canadian can play in a wide range of positions.

The Nerazzurri are poised for a profit worth around €100m after reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, but their finances could take a severe hit if they miss out on the top four in Serie A.

Inter are third in Serie A.

In a crucial game in their bid to avoid relegation, Cyle Larin's Real Valladolid beat Barcelona 3-1. Larin was Player of the Match with a PK and a great assist on another goal. He is seventh in goal scoring percentage in La Liga with 8 goals and three assists in 17 games. He is 21st in league scoring despite only playing half the games.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - CYLE LARIN (REAL VALLADOLID)

The 28-year-old Canada international was sensational tonight for his side. He kept cool under pressure to send Ter Stegen the wrong way and score his penalty and his assist for Gonzalo Plata's goal was a sensational bit of play to find a perfect pass. Larin was a handful all evening for the Barcelona defence and his constant dropping into pockets out wide made him hard to track. A great performance.

PLAYER RATINGS

Real Valladolid: Masip 8, Fresneda 7, Fernandez N/A, Sanchez 7, Olaza 7, Mesa 7, Aguado 7, Plata 8, Plano 7, Machis 7, Larin 9 Subs: Escudero 8, Monchu 6, Rosa 6, Perez 6, Torres 7

FC Barcelona: Ter Stegen 6, Balde 6, Alonso 6, Christensen 6, Roberto 6, Gavi 6, Garcia 6, De Jong 7, Torre 7, Lewandowski 7, Raphinha 7 Subs: Pena 6, Kessie 6, Dembele 6, Torres 6, Fati 6

Should be a good summer for three of Canada's best. Look for Jonathan David to go to the Premier League, Larin to stay in La Liga with RV or even a better club, and Tajon Buchanan to head to Inter Milan or another team in Serie A.

There's also a ton of Canadian players doing well in MLS now with four new players taken in the first round of the MLS draft. Two were chosen in the top eight of the four total in the first round.

Canada announces experienced squad for Concacaf Nations League Finals
canadasoccer.com June 7, 2023

Canada Soccer have announced their Men’s National Team squad for the upcoming 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canada will face Panama in the first Semi-final match on Thursday 15 June with the winner advancing to the Final on Sunday 18 June against the winner of the second Semi-final match between Mexico and USA.

The Concacaf Nations League Finals is the first of two continental trophies for which the Men’s National Team will compete this summer followed by the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup set to kick off later this month.

“This is an experienced group of players with a hunger to win silverware for Canada,” said John Herdman, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Head Coach. “We know we have a big opportunity in front of us to lift a trophy, but we also know it’s going to be difficult and we are relishing that challenge.”

CANADA’S SQUAD

Canada’s 23-man squad for the Concacaf Nations League Finals features footballers from professional clubs in 14 different countries. The squad features 19 players from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 including recent Canada Soccer Players of the Year Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David as well as six-time Player of the Year Atiba Hutchinson.

Canada’s three goalkeepers are Milan Borjan of Red Star Belgrade, Dayne St. Clair of Minnesota United FC, and Tom McGill of Brighton & Hove Albion. Borjan recently won his sixth-consecutive Serbian SuperLiga title with Red Star Belgrade.

At the back, Canada have centre backs Derek Cornelius of Malmö FF, Scott Kennedy of SSV Jahn Regensburg, Kamal Miller of CF Inter Miami, Steven Vitória of GD Chaves, and Dominick Zator of Korona Kielce as well as outside fullbacks Samuel Adekugbe of Galatasaray SK, Alistair Johnston of Celtic FC, and Richie Laryea of Toronto FC. Adekugbe recently won the Turkish Süper Lig with Galatasaray SK while Johnston won the Scottish Premiership with Celtic FC.

From the midfield up through to the attack, Canada have Hutchinson from Beşiktaş JK, David from Lille OSC, Davies from FC Bayern Munich, Tajon Buchanan from Club Brugge KV, Lucas Cavallini from Club Tijuana Xolos, Stephen Eustáquio from FC Porto, Junior Hoilett from Reading FC, Ismaël Koné from Watford FC, Cyle Larin from Real Valladolid CF, Victor Loturi of Ross County FC, Jonathan Osorio from Toronto FC, and David Wotherspoon from St. Johnstone FC. From the 2022-23 season, Davies won his fifth-straight Bundesliga title with FC Bayern while David broke his own Canadian record for most goals in a top-5 men’s European league (24 goals in 37 matches).

CONCACAF NATIONS LEAGUE FINALS

The second edition of the Concacaf Nations League Finals is being played amongst the four League A group winners: Mexico (Group A); Panama (Group B); Canada (Group C); and USA (Group D). The Semi-finals, Match for Third Place and Concacaf Final will all and will all be played at Allegiant Stadium. The Canada v Panama Semi-final match will kick off at 16.00 local (19.00 ET / 16.00 PT).

Both of Canada’s Concacaf Nations League Finals matches will be broadcast live on OneSoccer, available as a linear channel on Telus’ Optik TV (Channel 980), on the fuboTV Canada platform as well as online at OneSoccer.ca, and through the OneSoccer app. Fans will find extended coverage for the matches across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube featuring the hashtag #CANMNT.

The matchups for the Semi-finals were determined based on the Group Stage performance, with the highest-ranked team facing the lowest-ranked team. The Semi-finals will be followed by a Match for Third Place and Concacaf Final on Sunday 18 June. The Final will crown the Concacaf Nations League second champion after the United States won the inaugural edition in 2021.

Canada holds an all-time record of four wins, six draws and two losses against Panama, with the two nations each winning their respective home match in the recent FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Canada defeated Panama 4:1 in Toronto in October 2021, while Panama won 1:0 in the most recent meeting in the last match of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in Panama City just four days after Canada had already secured qualification to Qatar 2022.

Messi looks to be going to Inter-Miami; this will continue to elevate MLS and strengthen the overall league.

Or is he just the latest in a long string of players seeking one last pay day in the USA before they check out?

That's my thinking too. Beckham was the last one. This'll help for attendance I imagine for this season for sure.

Frank Lampard? Wayne Rooney? David Villa? Zlatan? (although he managed to defy his age and have his retirement tour back in Milan).

The MLS has continued to be the place for stars to play out their twilight years. Although the Saudis have been trying very hard to take that mantle.

Phil Neville and Richard Shaw joining Canada Soccer’ Men’s National Team Coaching Staff
canadasoccer.com June 9, 2023

Canada Soccer announced today that former English international, Phil Neville and former Crystal Palace, Coventry City and Millwall defender, Richard Shaw will be joining John Herdman’s Men’s National Team coaching staff. The two additions are effective immediately and will be part of Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team technical staff for the upcoming Concacaf Nations League Finals in Las Vegas.

“Both Phil and Richard bring with them winning experiences at the highest levels and have worked with some of the premier leagues top managers during their careers,” said John Herdman, Head Coach, Men’s National Team. “They’ll work as positional and unit coaches with the aim of helping us to win our first trophy in over two decades.”

After a successful playing career at Manchester United, where he won numerous titles, Neville transitioned into coaching. He worked as a coach at Manchester United and served as assistant manager at Valencia in La Liga. In 2018, he was appointed head coach of the England Women’s National Team and led them to a fourth-place finish at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and a tournament win at the 2019 SheBelieves Cup before being named head coach of Inter Miami. Neville is no stranger to head coaches of Canada’s national teams, as he previously worked with Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team head coach, Bev Priestman at England Women.

Richard Shaw had a triumphant playing career, primarily with Crystal Palace and Coventry City, amassing more than 650 appearances in English football before transitioning into coaching. He began his coaching journey at Millwall in October 2007, initially as a caretaker manager. Shaw then took on a coaching role at Crystal Palace, working as an under-23 coach by January 2013. In January 2021, he joined Watford as an under-23 assistant coach, serving under Omer Riza.

Canada will play Panama on 15 June, 2023 at Allegiant Stadium. A win will see them face the winners of USA or Mexico for the country’s first trophy since 2000.

Club take advantage of special relationship with Wolves again – Expected to secure signing from Molineux
Sean Lunt sportwitness.co.uk June 8, 2023

Grasshopper Zurich are again set to benefit from Wolverhampton Wanderers with winger Theo Corbeanu set to join the club.

That’s according to journalist Roman Kilchsperger, who says a deal is already in place for the 21-year-old Canadian to make the move to Switzerland.

He recently appeared on the Anderi Liga podcast, relayed by Sportal, and explained that the Hoppers ‘will once again receive’ players from Wolves this summer.

Corbeanu will be joining from Wolves this summer after he spent the second half of this season on loan with Arminia Bielefeld in 2. Bundesliga.

He failed to score a single goal for the club in 13 games for the German side after arriving in the January transfer window after a loan move to Blackpool was cut short earlier in the month.

It seems Wolves, who signed him from TFC Academy in Canada in August 2018, now plan to send him out on loan again and Grasshoppers will be his destination.

They have a special relationship with the club as they are owned by the wife of Fosun boss Guo Guangchang, and that’s seen numerous players move from Molineux to the club in recent years.

This season saw Renat Dadashov move to the club, while last season Bruno Jordao, Sang-bin Jeong and Leo Bonatini were all on loan there too. Now, it seems, Corbeanu is set to join that prestigious list.

None of those guys (except Zlatan) were much good anymore by the time they joined. Miami just signed a guy who was awarded the World Cup Golden Ball - seen to be the best player in almost undebatably the most important single competition in soccer, if not in all of sports - just six months ago. This is a guy who is still likely among the top 10-20 footballers in the world today, if not across the board, certainly within his position.

Canada defeats Panama 2-0 to advance to the Concacaf Nations League final, against the US, who beat Mexico in a wild affair 3-0. As a result of red cards, the US will be without Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest for the final.
