St. Louis and Kansas City

Drilling down a bit, what are the similarities (shared traits) and differences between these two Midwestern cities? I find them quite different. Been in both several times.

in some ways kansas city is the offspring of st. louis, so theres primarily a generational difference...kc was founded by a st. louisan. one city was born in the distant francophone frontier fog of the 1700s, an era of fur trapping families and faded conquistador helmets on shelves and later came of age in the victorian era. the other born when american westward movement had made it to the california/oregon/etc trailheads and is also more a product of the early twentieth century.
