Not development related, but Birmingham turns 150 today!

A lot of people are surprised to learn that Birmingham was founded after the Civil War.

Also, Birmingham was founded the same year as the Great Chicago Fire, and was supposed to become the next Chicago. We didn’t quite get there, but that’s ok

looks like Alamo Drafthouse / Cinema will be the anchor tenant for the Powell Avenue Steam Plant.

i've never been, but this seems like a pretty good "get"... hoping that space out front doesn't stay a giant parking lot though.

(edit: Birmingham is listed as "Coming Soon" on their website: https://drafthouse.com/)

I don't know what you expect. These projects fit well within their environs. For a city the size of Birmingham, at the rate it's growing, they're all perfectly appropriate.

We really need to find a little sandbox for you to sit and play around by yourself in...

CityWalk Bham opened up a couple of weeks ago during The World Games 2022. Now that all the barricades and tents are down, and the city is returning to normal, I took a stroll through today to document Birmingham's newest park destination:

Reports are that the City of Birmingham / BJCC / LiveNation are considering a proposal to bring a $50 million amphitheater downtown, in close proximity to the new Protective Stadium.

Article in al.com: $50 million amphitheater proposed for former Carraway campus

John Paepcke with WVTM 13 has some additional images on his FB page... obviously very preliminary at this point and would expect it to change.

Much clearer pics in this article... also suggests the branding of "Carraway Amphitheater". Maybe that's just for the purposes of the renderings, though. I'm glad the seats would face the skyline, like Nashville's Ascend:

Proposed $50 million Carraway amphitheater might replace Oak Mountain’s: What it would look like

That City Walk project is awesome. That's the type of development that can really take a city to the next level. Go Ham!

I need to do a better job of keeping this thread updated....

Anyways, here's some amazing news!

$49.8 million hotel project announced for downtown Birmingham landmark

AL.com

December 1, 2023

Quote:
A $49.8 million dual-branded hotel will be situated in one of downtown Birmingham’s most venerable buildings.

Ascent Hospitality is planning the hotel for the 16-story Brown-Marx Building on 20th Street North, according to Commercial Observer.

Atlanta-based Peachtree Group has originated a bridge loan for the project, which will have 338 rooms, as an AC & Element Hotel.

The AC Hotel, oriented toward business travelers, will have 190 rooms, while the Element hotel will have 148 extended-stay style rooms with kitchens.

The project is slated to open in 2025, the outlet reported.

The Brown-Marx Building was built in 1906, with additions in 1908 and 1930. It was one of the structures that made up the so-called “heaviest corner on Earth” because it, the John Hand Building and others at the First Avenue North and 20th Street intersection were considered large for their time.
