Buhler a step closer to goal
Equipment line nearly complete with acquisition of Alberta firm
By: Murray McNeill

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/bus...115545524.html

Basically its about Buhler/Versatile nearly acquiring a company maker of precision seeding and tilling equipment.

But the best part of the article is its mentioned that in 5 yrs time they may start assembling their parent Russian company combine line in Winnipeg.

"Rostselmash Ltd., the Russian company that acquired an 80 per cent share of Buhler in 2007, manufacturers combines, so company officials are looking into the feasibility of either shipping Rostselmash's combines to North America or sending the components here for assembly."

Combine assembly requires a LOT of space. This could mean a new building.

There was an auction at the Paddlewheel Riverboat office today. I guess it's really over.

City firm buys tower builder

By: Martin Cash

Exchange Income Corp. has built a solid profit machine owning regional airlines and a grab-bag of manufacturing companies.

But the Winnipeg company appears to have found another profitable niche industry -- cell phone towers.

The diversified holding company announced a deal Thursday to buy one of the largest cell tower manufacturer/construction companies in North America.

Exchange will pay $79 million for Westower Communications, a private company with annual revenues of about $200 million.

Bipole spurs capital investment
Manitoba steel fabrication company spends millions on expansion
By: Martin Cash
Posted: 03/26/2011 1:00 AM

It may not yet be clear just how much Manitoba Hydro's Bipole III transmission line will cost, but the massive project is already spurring capital investment from potential local suppliers.
A Manitoba steel fabrication company -- which sources identified as Sperling Industries of Sperling -- is spending millions of dollars on a 35,000-square-foot expansion.
The company's decision to go ahead with the investment provided the missing link for a consortium of steel companies to be able to qualify to bid on the contract to build the Bipole III transmission towers.
Vince Reidy, spokesman for the group called USM Steel Products Inc. -- made up of seven Manitoba companies with annual revenue totalling more than $100 million -- said efforts have been in the works for close to two years to put a consortium together. It wants to bid on the rights to build the 3,000 steel towers needed for the new transmission line the down the west side of Lake Winnipeg.

If Manitoba is producing 30,000 barrels of oil a day, and Saskatchewan sees 80,000, why is Manitoba not richer?

Somewhere else here I think someone said that was because Manitoba's oil is privately owned, so the province doesn't get royalties for it like Saskatchewan and Alberta do. Most of Saskatchewan's mineral wealth lately is from potash anyway, isn't it?

The Saskatchewan numbers are inaccurate. I read a while ago that production in Saskatchewan was around 425,000 barrels per day (maybe one of the Saskatchewan forumers can confirm this for us). I don't know how the free press could get the numbers so wrong...

National Bank eyes Wellington West takeover?
Already owns 17% of city firm
By: Martin Cash
Posted: 04/1/2011 1:00 AM

Winnipeg-based Wellington West Capital, one of the city's most successful financial start-ups of the last two decades, may be about to be taken over by National Bank of Canada.
Industry reports Thursday said Montreal-based National Bank is in "advanced talks" with Wellington West to buy up the remaining 83 per cent of the company it does not own.
In 2008, National Bank paid $35.8 million for 12.5 per cent of Wellington West. It subsequently added to its stake so it now holds about 17 per cent.
Neither company would confirm the reports, but Wellington West officials did not deny them, either.
A memo to its employee/shareholders, signed by CEO and founder Charlie Spiring and president Kish Kapoor, said, "There is nothing new about NBF's interest in Wellington West. Since NBF became a significant Wellington West shareholder it has regularly told its shareholders and analysts that it would be interested in owning more of Wellington West if the opportunity were to arise."

Good for them, I'm glad to see a Canadian firm, based in Winnipeg make an international acquisition. Hopefully they will be smart about it. And not take on more than they should. Steady as she goes.

I guess I was lucky then...

I was hired via office temp co. Drake Office Overload in the Fall of 1998.

They referred me to a position at Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada where I'd begin in June 7 1999 as a CR-03 (Data Entry) staff.

The name of the program over the years has gone from
AIDA > CFIP > CAIS > Agristability.

I've lasted almost 12 years there...

Started at about $29,000 ... and now my salary (before taxes) was about $41,000.

Not to shabby.

In those 12 years I moved apts., travelled to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and Chicago.

Done lots of stuff I wouldn't otherwise have done.

I like working with the office equipment and with some of the people, but its the others who were the problem... there are so many negative souls employed by the Feds, who can sometimes clash with those who are more positive like myself.

In 2009 Sask & BC took over control of administering the Agristability program, and so our department began a downsizing process.

Friday April 15th is my last day there.

I'm looking for some education upgrading in the I.T. field and am wondering where I can take a course that is NOT MCSE Microsoft. I'd prefer to Linux networking if I can find a job in this city that does that.
