Wyoming -

Some grandiose phrases in this article -

Quote:
A “natural next step” that will help “fulfill our destiny" to “finally fulfill [our] true potential”
It kind of seems like a "no duh / what took you so long" situation to me though. Obviously "University of Michigan" has higher clout & recognition than a name like "Metro Health" Even though the current name also references U of M, I've never heard anybody call it that. It's just "Metro Health".

Especially with MSU gaining recognition in Grand Rapids, this was only logical.

Plainfield Charter Township -

At the regular board meeting on June 28, trustees directed staff to pursue demolition of the former Witmark building on Jupiter Avenue. They also extended a moratorium on new single-story developments along the Plainfield Avenue corridor. All of this, in support of the new master plan initiatives to create denser nodes of development.

Byron Township -

The former South Christian High School at 160 68th St SW is being transformed into the Unified Sports & Inclusion Center. This will become the world's largest Special Olympics facility, with a 17-acre campus renovation that will create new sports fields, programming, administrative offices, training, educational and wellness space. The Urban Institute for Contemporary Art (UICA) moved into its new location at KCAD (17 Pearl St.) NW recently. In addition to the new gallery space, there's a small gift shop. Here's a few photos from the World Wide Web -

Plainfield Township -

Trustees approved a concept design for a new community center at their July 12 meeting. The 2-story center would be an addition to the existing YMCA along Jupiter Ave. The new facility would incorporate a walking track, banquet area, flexible meeting spaces, a demonstration kitchen, areas for Senior Citizens programming, fitness classrooms, and a gymnasium. The Township is working with Fishbeck and intends to put a millage proposal on the November Ballot to fund the work.

As summarized on the main US Census Bureau thread (and expanded a bit more here):

Grand Rapids' MSA further solidified its position as a 1,000,000+ metro with the recent 2020 data dump:

MSA - 2010: 993,670
MSA - 2020: 1,087,592
Numerical Change: 93,922
Percent Change: 9.5%

The CSA grew by about 100,000 residents:

CSA - 2010: 1,320,064
CSA - 2020: 1,423,632
Numerical Change: 103,568
Percent Change: 7.8%

Grand Rapids (city) did not breach the 200,000 mark, which surprises me a little. The 2019 estimates pegged it at 201,000+. It fell short by ~ 1,100 residents:

City - 2010: 188,040
City - 2020: 198,917
Numerical Change: 10,877
Percent Change: 5.8%

Kent County had healthy growth overall, at 9.2%. And neighboring Ottawa County had the largest percent growth in the entire state of Michigan, at 12.3%. All other counties contributing to the MSA & CSA grew, with the sole exception of Mecosta County, which had a 7.2% loss:

Kent County - 2010: 602,622
Kent County - 2020: 657,974
Numerical Change: 55,352
Percent Change: 9.2%

Ottawa County - 2010: 263,801
Ottawa County - 2020: 296,200
Numerical Change: 32,399
Percent Change: 12.3%

...in the new 111 Lyon Street retail development. The restaurant tenant was originally going to be Texas de Brazil, but they hit some some snags with COVID. The seafood place is expected to open early 2022.

Speaking of new restaurants, "Portico" is set to open Friday on the first floor of the new Canopy by Hilton hotel. Here's a link to their menu -

Starbucks' new store concept - in downtown Grand Rapids. I'm not sure I like it... it feels too sterile.

Here are a few more photos of newly-opened Portico, in the Canopy by Hilton (Studio Park). Some designer was getting fancy with the seating options -

Good to know that if it ever tanks, they can throw a Starbucks in there and it will look as thought it was always there. In all seriousness though, I really like the tall divided-light windows.
