Keep demolishing these pearls of modernity for the black-cladded mountains of post-modernity and you will have very depressing areas of town. ( And what is it about the color black? Along the lakeshore everyone was waring black. I thought I was at a funeral.) You know the architecture in Miami and Toronto is bright , cheerful, optimistic ,in other words--CHICAGO. Except now it is no longer in Chicago. Black cladding unless it is on a supertall will age fast.
To remain on point, the richness of Chicago, as both city and architecturally, will disappear unless there is some historical perspective in our thinking. Oh------where are Bob Newhart and Mclean Stevenson now?
OrdoSeclorum here. On St. Claire that garage is three driveways that go over the sidewalk. On Grand it's a chain-link fence. It's literally a blight.

Marina City is a landmark. Part of me would miss 401 N State. Get rid of all the rest of them, especially there's no retail at street level.

I would add Tigerman's 60 E. Lake St to the landmark list

Which is absolutely why we should protect the many fine examples of 60s-70s modern architecture in this city, many of which already have landmark status, and many more which should be given that distinction. But preserving something that is by resounding consensus ugly and of poor land use does not make sense.

untitledreality here,
Tear them all down. That era of Chicago symbolizes nothing but utter disdain for the urban environment, one in which irreplaceable monuments of man were replaced with storage sheds for the convenience of those who abandoned the city. (e.g. Garrick)

Yeah, the unrelenting monolith that is 401 N State has an aura about it, but its just vertical slats on a parking structure. Tigerman at 60 E Lake? Its a car. We get it. Take a picture and move on.

People over cars, every single damn time.

I see these buildings as, while be representative of an era, pedestrian unfriendly. Too much of Chicago is like that. Maybe the focus should be on smaller scale buildings that are pleasant at foot level instead of cold.

Architecture built for cars instead of people should never be cherished.

Very cool. Thanks for posting. While I absolutely don't mourn the demise of any, I would have like to have seen No 1 when it was still around.

Agree. I like this one, even it's base. Think it does about a good a job as you can with the current guidelines (assuming it falls within the affected area), which hopefully will still be tweaked.

The cladding on the buildings directly west of the marianos in so hideous. Such a missed opportunity.

1112 W. Carroll

1112 W. Carroll is now fenced off. The is the residential portion of the Trammell Crow two tower project. I'd heard the project was out for bid.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy...

More exciting is that the Power Construction sign is out front. This basically indicates they've been retained for the construction already? Seems like a very good sign (unintentional pun) to me.

They have a pending permit at the moment, which would line up with your info
