Council gets first look at proposed Austin Convention Center expansion
City staff: Renovations could be complete by 2021
By Joe LananeAugust 24, 2015

A proposal to expand the existing Austin Convention Center westward could help provide enough extra meeting space for larger conventions, said Mark Tester, director of the city’s Convention Center Department.

Gensler ultimately proposed expanding Austin Convention Center to the west, adding 200,000 square feet of exhibit space, 65,000 square feet of meeting space and a 56,700-square-foot ballroom as well as additional underground parking and loading dock space.

The city proposal also calls for a 3-acre “urban park” atop the expanded convention center, Tester said.

Voters in November 2016 may be asked to rededicate 2 cents from the existing hotel occupancy tax to expand Austin Convention Center, Tester said. Council Member Ellen Troxclair, who chairs the Economic Opportunity Committee, emphasized the tax is already in place and would not increase residential property taxes.

Should Austin residents agree to rededicate existing taxes to the proposed expansion, construction could start by 2020, and the renovated Convention Center could open by November 2021, according to the city’s projected long-range plan.

Report calls for up to $600 million Austin Convention Center expansion
Posted: 5:51 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2015

By Gary Dinges and Shonda Novak - American-Statesman Staff

A city-commissioned master plan for the Austin Convention Center recommends a multiblock expansion that would cost hundreds of millions of dollars and dramatically increase the facility’s footprint.

The Austin Convention Center has 881,400 gross square feet, according to city figures, with 369,132 square feet of exhibit and meeting space. The proposed expansion calls for adding 200,000 square feet of exhibit space, 65,000 square feet of meeting space and 56,700 square feet of ballroom space.

Preliminary plans call for construction to start in November 2018, with completion set for November 2021.

The expansion is proposed for land west of the existing convention center, across Trinity Street. Skywalks would be constructed so that the city wouldn’t have to close Trinity. Portions of two other streets would close, though – East Second and East Third streets between San Jacinto Boulevard and Trinity Street, according to the report.

Might be a good and worthwhile project, but rooftop parks tend to be chronically underused, for obvious reasons. People don't like the idea of traveling way out of their way just to sit on a bench. The same is true if you ask them to climb a dozen steps.

One challenge in this case (guessing) would be the need for any public park (if it's public) to allow anyone in. That would mean the hotel wouldn't be good enough access. Or maybe it's a private park in which case they can require people to have bathed, not be drunk (unless a hotel guest!), and so on.

It's a shame that booming cities like Austin and Seattle are building so many lame, short boxes. These cities could have transformed their skylines.

Dallas and Charlotte are also building a handful of cheap, short boxes, whereas Chicago is building many cheap, 500' cheap boxes.

I hope that this sad situation changes.

Plans now call for a 30-story hotel with 615 rooms, plus 65,000 square feet of meeting, exhibit and entertainment space. It'll also have three bars and a restaurant.

FAA crane permit - it's indicating two.

The taller of the two cranes will be 548 feet once the building is topped out. This is according to the crane plan from the city.

It looks nice, but the random-window-placement thing has gotten derivative.
