South security checkpoint expansion plan advances

https://www.ajc.com/business/hartsfi...4YpOSLh0oQZPN/

Quote:
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport plans to spend $37.4 million to expand the domestic terminal south checkpoint to help alleviate long lines for security screening.

The project will add five automated “smart lanes” near Delta Air Lines check-in and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

With the expansion of the south checkpoint from four lanes to nine lanes, Hartsfield-Jackson will have a total of 32 lanes at the domestic terminal, in addition to the 14 security lanes at the international terminal.

The new lanes will be built where the old Delta international check-in was before the international terminal opened in 2012.

I usually go to the airport around 8-9 times a year, the last time I went was in January returning from Incheon International. I want to see the domestic terminal and the new upgrades.

I hear you, yes. Lots of fun upgrades and changes. Over the last 30 years I've probably averaged 30 or so flights a year; sometimes less, sometimes more. To have only 5 and be more than half way through the year is really weird for me.

I inquired with a senior level Airport rep who said that the hotel is still having difficulty being funded. On one hand, I get it, because of the pandemic and travel being so far down. But, it wouldn't even open until 2023 at this rate. Having a true on-airport, terminal-adjacent hotel debut in 2023 will be a huge benefit to ATL and should do well for the hotel operator. Even now with ATL operating at around 35-40% of year ago local departing passenger levels, a hotel in that location with no shuttle service necessary could do very well for those who get stuck at the airport after missing an evening connection and are looking for a hotel for the night. Also will work well with some airline flight crews, though they negotiate rates which are lower than market so not as lucrative for the hotel. A guaranteed paid for block of rooms is better than empty ones which made no revenue. Those are just two of several segments of clientele which would find this location appealing. Maybe they'll be successful in landing funding by year-end and can get going with physical construction in 2021 for a 2023 opening. Fingers crossed.

I was there early March. There's nothing to see yet. I think some groundwork may have started.

Before they could start construction, they had to move the North Terminal exit road, relocate a fire station, and adjust the North Terminal economy parking lot including building new exit payment booths. That part (which took easily 1.5 years) was just finished. Now they can begin the concourse construction in earnest.

This suggests they may have started with that in January:

Airport mascot?

I found this strange little article from 2001. Anybody ever hear of this?

If I track down any other info, I'll post it here

The Atlanta International Airport is by far the most exciting place in Atlanta. I really feel the international buzz and the energy of the city when I am there. It's my favorite airport.
