Future redevelopment of West Sacramento's riverfront Stone Lock area is a few years away, but steps to make it development-ready are coming in the interim.
Last week, the city released a "story map" depicting what the future site could look like, beginning a process of community engagement to discuss city steps so far and understand what's there.
"The next step is going to be a combination of little things that add up to big things," said Katie Yancey, West Sacramento's community investment manager. That includes improving lighting and fencing around the existing buildings at Stone Lock, and planning with city parks officials about establishing a trailhead on part of the property. Flood control work is also being planned.
Used at one time for ship traffic between the Port of West Sacramento and the Sacramento River, Stone Lock is now inert and includes more than 100 acres of vacant land on the north and south. The port and the city own different parts of the property.
Overall development of Stone Lock is planned as a series of four five-year phases, with the city nearing the end of the first. Over the next 15 years, Yancey said, the city will start adding amenities such as a park, and both the city and the port will issue requests for proposals for projects on vacant land.
