Aside from the usual racoons and foxes like everywhere else, South Florida is also home to Alligators and American Crocodiles. They don't just stay in the suburban fringes. I saw a croc the other day in the marina in Coconut Grove right next to city hall.
Apparently they are relatively common in that area.

Manatees are a common site in many waterways as well.
for example, check these out: https://www.google.com/maps/@25.6155.../data=!3m1!1e3

Here is a list of the wildlife I've seen in Phoenix (mostly out in the suburbs, obviously):

coyotes, javalina, foxes, skunks, bobcats, racoons, and a million rabbits (used to see the bigger jack rabbits but haven't in a while).

rattlesnakes, king snakes, gopher snakes, red racers

The birds I see on a daily basis are pretty extensive (quail, hummingbirds, and all the other common ones), some of the more interesting birds I see usually every week or every month: redtail hawks, roadrunners, various owls, small finches or fly catchers.

I even saw a bald eagle twice in the past year, that was surprising to me.

Rats are obviously the most common in NYC. Hawks probably hold second place. Raccoons and possum tie for third. Ducks and geese are common in the parks, especially Central Park. Horseshoe crabs are extremely common around Jamaica Bay in the late spring and early summer. I've seen skunks in Manhattan before, but somewhat rare. Whales come into New York harbor every so often. I've seen small sharks at Coney Island beach, and it's actually illegal to fish them in New York. If caught they must be thrown back into the water.

Hawks above pigeons (aka the feathered rat) for #2 in NYC?

I wouldn't have guessed that.

Actually pigeons, yes. Pigeons should be #1 and rats #2. Pigeons are so visible that they become invisible lol. They even know how to walk on the sidewalks with people and not get stepped on.

Growing up in Reno, some elementary schools would cancel classes due to mountain lion sightings.

In NYC - clearly squirrels, rats, and pigeons are king

however, there are other animals that have substantial breeding populations within the 5 boroughs:

Coyotes/Coywolves (hybrid between Coyote and Wolf)
Wild Turkey
Rabbits
Deer
Raccoons
Possums
Dolphins
Seals

And while not in the city limits, there are black bears over the border (including palisades park across the GWB); and in Westchester county. I would not be surprised if one of these days a stray black bear wanders into the Bronx. They have been spotted in Newark as well as the very urban Hudson county, directly across from Manhattan.

There are 3 coyotes hanging in a cemetery a block north of me and the are walking in the adjoining park and neighborhood streets. Makes walking my dogs very interesting/unnerving.

Land mammals are a-holes. The Pacific is the main attraction in SoCal. The coastal waters here are the richest marine ecosystem in the world.

Speaking of phone and power poles, woodpeckers are constantly going to town on them and it's not as annoying as one would think. Besides the animals already mentioned for the CA mountains, there's otters, muskrats, minks, gophers, Tule elk, Sonoma chipmunk, and we're most known for the largemouth bass.

Anyone else noticed an explosion of coyotes everywhere? When I lived up in NY, I never saw or heard one even up in the ADK's while now they are everywhere. I was up there visiting a few weeks ago, and it was like I was out in the AZ desert. Saw some everyday and heard them howling all night. There are also coywolves which are bigger coyote/ wolf hybrids.

Toronto has a fairly large range of wildlife for a large North American city.

Whitetail deer are fairly common, here's a couple hanging out in the Humber Arboretum...

The first 3 pics are from Toronto-wildlife.com; the Foxes pic is from www.macleans.ca

Here's a beaver at work in the lower Don River, which is essentially the eastern edge of downtown Toronto:

A coyote in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Midtown Toronto:

A couple of years running some Foxes (again quite common in Toronto) made a den on Toronto's most popular Beach, under the boardwalk:

Aside from those, I've seen Bald Eagles, many assorted hawks, several kinds of snakes and turtles.

Bears are rare but sometimes make it into the outer suburbs every couple of years.

I saw one javelina a few years ago walking my dog through a neighborhood in Flagstaff and it scared the shit out of me one, because they can be vicious little fucks and two, I thought they traveled in packs?

Oddly enough, I never see foxes in the Ottawa-Gatineau area (eastern Ontario, western Quebec).

I know they're here - they're a locally present species.

But they're an extremely rare sight.

Same with me.

When I was a kid coyotes were something I associated with the west and the prairies.

I believe they've been spreading eastward and northwards for a couple of decades.

They're now very present in much of Quebec. You don't see them much in urban areas (not even in the suburbs like where I live) but not that far away where there are farm fields they are much more visible and the people who live around there hear them howling.

My guess is that there a lot more of them than wolves in this region. Wolves tend to be a much greater distance away from the city. At least an hour away from here until you actually have a chance of meeting up with one.

Another now common animal that wasn't very present when I was a kid: wild turkeys. They're all over the place here now. I see them all the time.

Bears also occasionally venture right into the heart of the city here, as there are a few "greenways" that run from wilderness areas all the way into town uninterrupted, and if they are lucky (or unlucky) they can accidentally follow them right downtown.

There also aren't moose in the urban area but they are all around us too. Occasionally one will find its way into the suburbs, and maybe fall into someone's swimming pool.

Yes.

I took this photo of one last month in Cincinnati, about 1/4 mile from the zoo. It crossed my mind that there is some crazy scenario in which an exotic zoo animal from Asia or Africa is attacked by a domestic coyote.
