After a years-long (covid-delayed) process, the nation's 2nd largest county (Cook) officially has a new flag!

And it's MUCH better.

Dayton, Ohio just unveiled their new flag a few months ago. I rather like it, but it's perhaps a bit too abstract to be easily-readable in the traditional vexillology sense.

If you can see the flag details from a mile away, then it’s a good flag.

The whole point of a flag is to identify distant foreign units at a glance (or an online emoji nowadays) especially if the language is not shared. The symbolism stuff is just the fluff for the artistic people among us.

São Paulo state:

It's an emblematic flag, very recognizable and widely used.

São Paulo city

Both Philadelphia's and Pennsylvania's flags break all the rules of a well designed flag. Little figures with other little elements is generally frowned upon and not thought of as well designed.

Anytime I see Philadelphia's flag, for some reason, it makes me think of the painted ceiling in the Swedish History Museum and how it says "The Establishment of Civilization". Gives off heavy parks and rec Pawnee town hall mural vibes lol.

Indeed, and couldn’t have fit better to SP: from a sleepy provincial capital up to the late 19th century, to become the continent’s largest and wealthiest.

I didn’t know when the motto was created, but according to Wikipedia, it was in 1917 when SP was still three times smaller than Rio.

hmm, it looks like they went back to that one -- because the one they had reminded everyone of the old notorious mega dump landfill too much!

From my former town, Londrina:

The Red is due the very fertile red earth and the Silver Southern Cross is due self explanatory.

I like it because its a very unique flag. Brazilian municipalites flags all have a coat of arms in the middle and complex designs.

Next up, changing the Illinois state flag

For now, it will be just a bit awkward seeing a cartoon eagle choking on strips of bacon alongside the Chicago and Cook County flags.

^ yeah, IL's current state flag is terrible.

yet another dumb old "seal on a field" design.

why do so many states go down that stupid, lazy road for their flag designs?

here's a chicago mag article from several years ago about how IL's flag sucks:

The Illinois Flag Is Terrible

this alternative state flag for IL was designed about 100 years ago for the state's centennial, but it was sadly never adopted.

designed by the same dude who designed chicago's awesome flag, the 21 stars represent that IL was the 21st state in the union.

it's perhaps a bit too simplistic, but it's still light years better than IL's current crap-tacular flag.

^ I like it! It's vaguely reminiscent of the Puerto Rican flag, which I've always liked. Maybe I'm just biased because IL is such a lackluster state, but state flags don't seem as important as city flags somehow.

That said, not sure if this has been discussed, but California's flag breaks/bends some rules and yet it is very iconic, easily recognizable and I don't think I would really like a simplified version of it as much.

Well whatever. I tried.

Anyway I went looking for NY flag redesigns and I found one that looked cool. It was the Empire State Building offset just a little bit to the left. It was orange and blue, same as the rest of the flag but the colors were switched on it compared to the overall flag. And then it was surrounded by I think 11 stars.

Flint, Michigan does not have an official flag that I can find. But its unofficial flag reportedly looks like this -

Source: crwflags.com

I mean, OK, I get it. It's the spark from a flint. But it looks a lot like a bullet hole, or a gunshot wound, or blood spatter, or all three...

Quote:
"We do not have any resources that specify an official flag for the City of Flint. We were told by Former Mayor James Rutherford that he designed an unofficial flag during his first term as mayor beginning in 1975. It was later redesigned during the 1990s by Former Mayor Woodrow Stanley..."
The city even has a photo of it on the front page of their website, so it's real -

It could also be a splash of tainted water...
