About 5.5 miles out, as the California condor flies, from Camp Reynold's Hospital on Angel Island to Salesforce Tower.

My dad had a bit of a health scare yesterday, but at least he had a nice view from his recuperation room!

Chicago from Illinois Masonic Hospital up in Lakeview, ~4 miles north of the loop.

Is Canary Wharf/docklands cluster out of the photo? London now has the best skyline in Europe. This view is from the north, looking south, or the other way around? In other words, is the mouth of the Thames to the left, or right? I can see the dome of St. Paul's in the center, and the big ferris wheel on the left. London photos sometimes confuse me as to direction.

You can tell it's facing more to the north taken from the south since the London eye (which is near Westminster) is on the left so that means the mouth of the Thames is to the right. Canary Wharf would be further to the right.

yep Canary Wharf (the biggest cluster) isn't pictured, and it would be on the right nearer the mouth of the Thames. It's south looking north.

Canary Wharf:

Chicago has a ton of prewar skyscrapers, something no city in Europe (or in fact much of the United States) has. It also has a ton of distinctive skyscrapers built between 1960 and 1980, again, something that no city in Europe has.

I do think that DT Chicago suffers a bit because nearly all of the small buildings are gone whereas many blocks in Manhattan, and of course everywhere in Europe, still have small prewar buildings in the business districts.

Chicago may have built a lot of prewar highrises but they aren't very tall because of the height limits. You can't see them from far away. There are few examples of prewar skyscrapers outside of NYC that can be seen from far away. Probably only Terminal Tower in Cleveland, which held the title of tallest building outside of NYC for many years over Chicago.

1. Chicago didn't have height limits.

2. Cleveland might've had one pre-war tower taller than chicago's tallest pre-war tower, but of the 25 tallest pre-war skyscrapers on the planet outside of New York, 13 of them were built in Chicago.

So it's not really accurate to say that Chicago's pre-war towers aren't very tall, they just weren't very tall compared to NYC. but against any other city not name NYC on the planet at the time, Chicago by far had the largest and tallest skyline.
