Interesting to see that California is now declining in Hispanic foreign born population.

There has been many articles about reversal of immigrants from Mexico. Of course there are many reasons why . More deportation and border enforcement. Mexico having a growing economy that there is less need to seek opportunities.

California in particular has shifted economics from a large manufacturing state to a decreased one due to AI, automation and jobs in world factories like China. The high housing and COL likely attracts less immigrants. Those that came to California legal or not was largely from the 1970s to early 2000s. Many are old, retiree age and some want to return to family and retire there.

I think California will see more loss in the 2020s but immigrants will still come but seek out other states.

Couple of thoughts from this info:

- Great to see Detroit doing so well with Asian immigration. Right behind Chicago for total numbers of Asian immigrants in the past decade. I understand most ME immigrants head to Dearborn and Hamtramck. It'd be great if the city of Detroit could start to land a greater share. Spillover from those communities could provide stability and have a revitalizing effect on areas away from the already revitalizing core.

- 375,000 Hispanic immigrants to South Florida- a significant amount more than any other American city this decade. Though I imagine some cities would have higher numbers if Puerto Rico was counted. I know they are US citizens so they aren't immigrants, but in terms of looking at Hispanic migration to US cities, that's a pretty fairly significant community in places like NYC. Even Cleveland would probably fair much better here if PR was included.

- I wonder what explains the significant drop in European immigration to Chicago?

There is no way I believe that LA has not gained Asians from last decade. Zero chance. This census was a disaster

LA did gain Asians in the last decade. It just received less than in the previous decade.

That table is showing change in migration from the previous decade, not actual migration in the last decade.

Where are these, and subsequent table's, numbers coming from?

It would be helpful if you could provide a link to the source of the data - is it 2019 ACS data, actual Census count, yearly estimates?

As hard as I try, I can't seem to find the above data within the multitudes of tables on the Census pages. I am trying to find information for places not included in your tables.

We don't know that. The numbers refer to the 2010-2020 period, not "now."

A lot of this isn't surprising to me, like the outward spread of Latino areas, the clear gentrification around the urban core, the greater diversity of the outer parts of the North Side, etc. But how much less black the West Side has become is pretty shocking. In another 20 years there might only be a handful of black neighborhoods left outside of the South Side.

North Texas population soars past 8 million — and counting, data says

Here’s an astounding growth milestone for North Texas: The region’s population now exceeds the population of the state of Washington.

New data from the North Central Texas Council of Governments indicates that as of January 1, an estimated 8,097,170 people lived in the 16-county region. The region comprises the 12 counties of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, as well four adjacent counties: Erath, Navarro, Palo Pinto, and Somervell.

The council’s tally shows North Texas added 157,570 residents last year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. In vaulting over the 8 million mark, North Texas can boast that it’s home to more residents than the state of Washington (around 7.8 million).

yeah, when looking at the 20 year change, the difference on the far west side becomes stark.

back in 2000, all but a handful of census tracts in austin, north lawndale and east & west garfield park (and even some in southern humboldt park & the western half of the near west side) were >90% black.

and today, there's only 18 such tracts on the entire west side of the city. now, it's important to also remember that chicago has lost 266,000 black residents since 2000, and many of those were from the west side, so some of it is "increased" diversity through subtraction, but there's no doubt that the squeeze is now on chicago's formerly solid black west side, with whites pushing west from downtown, and latinos pushing down from humboldt & belmont/cragin and up from south lawndale (little village).

that said, there's a large and solid chunk of the west side that's still >75% black, so i don't think the "black west side" is going away entirely in the next 20 years, but the continuing decrease in the extreme intensity of the west side's black ghetto is probably a good thing, overall.

a similar such phenomenon can be seen on the south lakefront from downtown down to hyde park. much fewer deep dark blues down there than there were 20 years ago. ditto for englewood/west englewood.

in general, and with the exception of the nearly complete latino takeover of the SW side, the decrease in the number of tracts >90% of any single macro-demo all over the city from 2000 - 2020 is a positive trend.

Key facts about U.S. Hispanics and their diverse heritage:

"Venezuelans, Dominicans and Guatemalans saw the fastest population growth since 2010."

"From 2010 to 2017, 10 of the 15 largest origin groups grew faster than the Hispanic population overall, which increased 16%. The Venezuelan population in the U.S. increased 76% to 421,000 in 2017, by far the fastest growth rate among Hispanic origin groups. Among groups with populations above 1 million, Dominicans and Guatemalans had the fastest growth."

" The Mexican population grew by 11% from 2010 to 2017, tied for the lowest growth rate among the 15 origin groups. The Peruvian and Ecuadorian populations in the U.S. saw similarly slow growth rates."

^ mexican-american growth rates might be falling on a relative basis, but according to that link, mexican-americans still make up 62% of all latinos in the US!!!

the next largest single group is puerto ricans with only 9% of all US latinos.

and once you get outside of the I-95 corridor (whose cities tend to have way more latino diversity with all of the various Caribbean groups well represented), mexican-american dominance tends to get even stronger in most places (in chicagoland for instance, mexican-americans make up almost 80% of all latinos in the MSA).
