Depends how far back you want to go, but the area around Hornby street was perhaps the most prominent. The last vestiges of this district is Hy's steakhouse and a far lesser extent, Brandis Show Lounge

That had nothing to do with the city, and was a decision made my ownership. They decided to try a new format, and they have enough properties to finance the move. A new or smaller operator will never be able to pull that off.

We're miles behind Alberta in terms of liquor licensing, and you coming from Alberta no doubt will notice this. To be fair, some i improvements have been made, but we still have a long long way to go. The Province has made giant steps but sadly, Vancouver be Vancouvering and takes a hostile view towards clubs and keeps throwing up roadblocks to such endeavours.

And BC is a rock star when it comes to wine pricing and taxation. It is so much less expensive in Alberta.

Interesting to see what will become of the space. The format needs a fresh start

the new Cascades Casino Delta is open now. Its very awkward to get to. The hotel isn't ready yet but all the restaurants and casino are open.

If you're into slots they have all the latest games like Crazy Rich Asians, Huff N More Puff. Could draw some people away from Richmond as the slot options are much better.

Has to be the worst most autodependent development since Tsawassen Mills. What’s in the water in Delta?

It's a small casino and nowhere near Tsawwassen Mills in size. Still, a shuttle might be a great idea for them. Any good dining options there?

The buffet is only open on weekends (not sure if that's temporary or not?). They have a Match, which has locations at lots of other casinos. It was nice enough, not nearly as big as River Rock, I think it's an appropriate size.

As for complaints about the location, I think it's a good location choice. It used to be the Town and Country, so this spot has always been a hotel and ~entertainment type spot. This is just a vast improvement for the site compared to the old hotel, it was getting pretty run down. Plus being right on the highway (and close to Hwy. 17) makes it easy for people from Richmond, Delta, Surrey. I think it will even draw people in from South Surrey/White Rock. And being in South Delta, it's not like they had the option of putting it next to a train station... There is actually the main 640 bus route along River Rd. which goes east to Scott Road Station and west to Ladner Exchange. For Delta, this site actually is transit friendly. And there is a proposal on the lot of the old Shell Station for an apartment complex. I started working in Tilbury in early 2008 and drove by this site every day. I would never have believed you if you told me then there would be a destination casino resort and high density residental on that spot one day in the future

No-fun city no longer? Vancouver looks to build a vibrant nighttime economy

"We are so far behind in terms of use of public space for large public events in Vancouver and a lot of it is just the way the city has been planned." — Nate Sabine

Author of the article:Joanne Lee-Young
Published Mar 21, 2023

Vancouver has spent years seeking ways to address its no-fun reputation by envisioning a vibrant nightlife that spills into streets and other public areas.

Now, with travel and tourism coming back, but a return to downtown office patterns still in flux, it is seeking the public’s input on questions such as what a “night mayor” might do and what simple things could be easily implemented as a larger plan is developed.

“What we hope to find out are the needs and wants and the concerns of various communities … so that we understand what the city needs,” said Nate Sabine, who sits on the board of the Hospitality Vancouver Association.

The association is asking the public and community groups to take a survey of about 20 questions related to creating a so-called nighttime economy, which is basically tourism, hospitality, arts, cultural and economic activity between the hours of 5 p.m. and 4 a.m.

I was there tonight, all the memorabilia has been removed, it felt a little empty.
