Not a good look for ABC especially coming on the heels of their rebate of empty house tax to the "deserving poor" developers, such as the Duke of Westminster.

Motion to track Broadway ‘demovictions’ rejected by Vancouver city council
By Darrian Matassa-Fung Global News

Vancouver city council has rejected a motion to track the pace of ‘demovictions’ along the Broadway corridor.

Housing development in the Broadway neighbourhood is expected to ramp up in the future following last year’s passing of the Broadway Plan.

Green Party Coun. Pete Fry said that could mean 2,000 existing households could be forced out each year for redevelopment due to developments.....

Did anyone seriously expect a different approach? Giving tax breaks to the rich and doing as little as they can to help the poors is the conservative modus operandi.

Fry's motion was a bit strange tho as it was his back door way to enact pace-of-change. Having an official quarterly / annual report or no report won't change how many people have to move due to new construction.

Either way people will have to move before construction and more people will move in after.

Which is why it's questionable that they would vote not to track that information. We know that demovictions are an inevitability with this plan, but it's still important information to track imo. The cost would be minimal too. Not really sure what the downside of tracking it would be, other than it would provide data to help analyze the success of the rental protections...

What's the upside exactly? If renovictions are lower than projected, does that mean more development would be allowed? Unlikely. If renovictions are higher than projected, is this just ammunition for NIMBY obstructionism? Pretty likely.

Seems like a lose lose to me.

I would say if you're going to propose and enact policy, it's essential to track the effects of that policy, regardless of who chooses to use that data.

Often you won't even know how the data came come in handy until it's already too late

But I mean the data is known. There are x amount of people living in the Plan area and the projection is x new residents.

Fry's motion was to be fuel for delaying building new rental and adding hours to stretched Staff. It's silly and onerous. The renters are as protected as can be. And vacancy is at an all time low.

General rule of thumb: when Adriane Carr is in favour of something, the YIMBY solution is usually the opposite of that thing. Credit where credit is due, ABC saw through it.

Broadway public realm - South Granville Plaza West Pop-up Feedback

Quote:
The public plaza at Granville & W 13th Ave was even busier than normal yesterday as over 80 people dropped by to help shape the future public realm along the Broadway SkyTrain. This survey closes today, so don’t pass up your chance to be heard

I keep hoping that on top of all the provisions made for pedestrians and cyclists, that Broadway reborn will also be spiffy, a bit like Wilshire Blvd in LA.

That's awesome, especially along Broadway.

Now, now, ABC promised bike lanes could be considered in the future. Just not now because that would require a redesign of the subway vents and other streetscape elements, and it will obviously be much cheaper in the future to add bike lanes when all the concrete is poured as compared to now when many of the plans are simply lines on paper.

Keeping in mind that reducing Broadway to two lanes would likely have screwed up the FTN and limited future bus frequency.

Some streets exclude transit, others exclude cars, some even exclude pedestrians; bikers and rollers can still access Broadway, they "just" need to head up/down one block and then dismount and walk. Personally, I'd focus on geting 8th and 10th to triple-A rather than picking a fight over a done deal.
