Can someone confirm if this information on WikiMapia is correct? It says that RDS plans to construct a "massive" complex containing apartments, multiplexes and a five star hotel off Seaport-Airport Road.

http://wikimapia.org/#lat=9.996841&l...17&l=0&m=a&v=2

I had noticed construction work progressing at the site, but I was under the impression that it was an arts college by Rajagiri coming up there.

Stress on PPP model in urban development

Call to integrate satellite towns with larger cities

‘Final proposal for Kochi Metro likely within a fortnight’

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KOCHI: Building of urban infrastructure requires large funds, but there are limitations on budgetary allocation of funds for projects. This situation underscores the need for public-private participation (PPP) in various projects for urban development, said M. Ramachandran, Secretary, Urban Development, Government of India.

He was addressing a session on public-private part icipation in urban infrastructure, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, in association with the Ministry of Urban Development here on Saturday.

Integration of satellite towns

He said infrastructure projects should aim at integration of satellite towns with larger cities, taking future needs into consideration. A variety of projects could be taken up under PPP in urban areas.

People’s participat ion should be ensured in these projects. Several PPP projects have been successfully implemented in a host of cities.

Mr. Ramachandran said he had held talks with the State government on Kochi’s metro rail project and the latter was engaged in finalising the mode of executing the project. A final proposal was expected in a fortnight.

Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams said the municipal corporation was required to follow certain formalities and procedures and sometimes these came in the way of executing PPPs. The lack of a masterplan had affected Kochi’s growth. She said partnership arrangements needed clarity and precision. She also urged people to realise their social responsibility.

V. Jayaprakash, Deputy Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, described the projects undertaken in the city under partnership agreements. M. Bhaskaran, Mayor of Kozhikode, said the government should undertake a propaganda to spread awareness on the positive aspects of PPPs, as people were often concerned over issues such as toll.

Migration of business

Suresh Joseph, general manager, Dubai Ports World, said hartals and strikes had affected the progress of the work as well as the image of the company. Migration of business to neighbouring States and foreign countries could be attributed to the unfavourable environment that was prevalent in the State. However, he said the State had skilled manpower and an attitudinal change could bring about a bright future.

Umang Patodia, chairman, CII Kerala State Council; B. Rajesh, principal consultant, PricewaterhouseCoopers Pvt. Ltd; Hemant Joshi, managing director, CRISIL Infrastructure Advisory; Pamela Anna Mathew, chairperson, Urban Kerala Mission; V. Ravichandar, CEO, Feedback Business Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd.; Sundeep Kumar, financial controller, New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Ltd.; V.V. Krishnarajan, deputy project director, Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project; and M.S.A. Kumar, vice-chairman, CII Kerala State Council; spoke.

The Government of Kerala is planning to develop an Oceanarium spread over 44 acres at New Vypeen in Kochi on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model with an investment of Rs 300 crore. The proposed Oceanarium which will be launched by 2010 is expected to be the largest in South East Asia. According to sources the Government of Kerala, Ministry of Earth Science and Government of India will hold 49 per cent stake and the remaining 51 per cent will be allocated to private parties.

The Oceanarium will have a 250 meters glass tunnel passing through the sea ass its highlight. Apart from this the project plans include an amphitheatre for sound and light shows, a micro-world museum, which will display small creatures and a marine museum to display marine animals and plants. A Dolphinarium and a general aquarium will showcase dolphins and different variety of fish from all over the world. It will also have separate ponds for tortoises, sharks and special zones for coral reefs. An International Marine Biological Research Centre and Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology Centre and a convention centre will also be part of the project along with space for events and cafeteria. According to sources entry fee will be in the range of Rs 250-400 per person.

"The government of Kerala has decided to allot 50 acres of land to Kerala State Fisheries Department (KSFD) for this project, of which ten acres will be allocated to the Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology Centre. KSFD has appointed a nodal agency Fisheries Resource Management Society to look after this project, which is yet to appoint a developer for the project. It has received queries from a few investors. At the moment, the Department of Tourism has not been involved in this initiative," informed A K Gopala Krishnan, Executive Director, Fisheries Resources Management Society.

It's raining skyscrapers in Kochi!!!!!

After the 100 storey Exhibition and Trade centre, here is a 99 storeyed one from Apple-a-day properties!!!

The official announcement of this tower, which is to come up in 99 acres of a proposed Rs.3,500 crore "planned city", will be made only in December 2008. They have said that the tower will be the largest in south India.

I checked about this project with one of my freiend who is associated with KBF. what he told is , yes , this project is very much there . Its a joint project by Rajagiri and RDS . This is coming with new 4 lane Smart City road frontage ( Please check). It has apartments , Office spaces, Mall etc.

The most strange thing he told is , 120 units of this project is already sold out !!!!! this is being done using Rajagiri's contacts...

I'm afraid all I have with me now is my phone's cam, and its clarity isn't exactly what you call terrific. I tried photographing the text, but it appears blurred, so I just took a shot of the full section. You can see the tower mentioned clearly however.

(Click for a larger resolution)

Key highlights of the project are:
*International architecture and design
*Total plan outlay of Rs.3,500 crore.
*10,000 units (?) proposed to be constructed
*6 lane road-connectivity throughout the proposed development area of 99 acres.
*Star hotels, malls, amusement centres, multi-speciality hospitals also part of the project.
*Tower with around 99 stories, which would be the largest in South India.
*The company expects to get required clearances before December 2008, when it will officially launch the project.
*Once launched, the company expects to finish the construction within 5 years.

All the hype aside, I'm rather skeptical as to how Apple-a-day can finance such a project. Let's wait and see how it materialises...

That is a really interesting news. The plot is really big. The construction currently going on is in one corner of the plot right now (close to Rajagiri Engineering college). The smart city road is on the other side. The building will have to be really "massive" indeed to have Smart City road frontage. But they could just as well build a new road through their plot. Then it'll be just a turn off from the Smart City road.
