I kept changing numbers for a while back then. Old timers are well aware that the included call minutes were limited each month (and all texts cost money). So each year, the phone companies offered more minutes under new phone contracts. But the downside was that you needed to switch phone numbers each time for whatever reason. (

I think Cingular (now AT&T) finally came out with their "keep your number" perk even if you signed a new phone contract to get more monthly minutes. Pretty soon, all the phone companies were doing the same. So we no longer needed to do the yearly "here's my new number" dance with your contacts.
