This is the Church of Nativité-de-la-Sainte-Vierge-d'Hochelaga. Built in 1924. It's main tower is a full 60m tall.

Is any one of those towers in my photo as interesting or inspiring as the mountains?

Didn’t think so.

Some incredible Montreal (Rico and Martin Mtl) and Toronto pics- thanks for sharing! Love seeing the residential neighbourhood Rico, thanks for the tour, nice to see beyond the downtown core.

TorontoDrew - love the new Flickr pictures, I have some new people I need to follow there now! This picture is everything:

Untitled by dzesika devic, on Flickr

I think every city has those old school European barbers - real characters, not politically correct and a few risqué pictures or magazines laying around.

Reminds me of Jimmy the Greek here in Victoria:

“ Jimmy Pavlidis, who trained as a barber in Giannitsa, Greece, from age 13, fell in love with Victoria upon a vacation with his wife and moved here in the late ’60s. Today, with 58 years running Jimmy’s Barber Shop and 68 years of total work experience, 84-year-old Pavlidis is Greater Victoria’s longest-serving barber.” Source

I even found a few pics of him and his shop on Flickr:

Jimmy's by Jay Carrieres, on Flickr

Jimmy's Barber Shop by Wayne, on Flickr

And a pic from 12 years ago - this guy probably still hasn’t gone to a barber:

Well, I got the number of photos down from 79 to 39 for the monthly Victoria roundup.

February 2023 Victoria Photos

Photo 1.

Rudlin Street. While not a fan of of the colour scheme, I do love the subtle but thoughtful details of this house. Simple things like the trimming the hedges overhanging the wall, the placement of shrubbery, the bench by the bottom of the stairs, the old fashion mailbox beside it, and the little house design by the front door. Nothing too elaborate but it all comes together.

Photo 2.

700 block of Fort Street. If you look closely at the Ditch record store building it’s a miracle it’s still standing. Looks like a jumble of bricks with some timber on top. Still has lots of personality but along with the building on the right it’s days are numbered as there is a hotel proposed to take their spot.

The Mod condo nearing completion with the Black and White condo in the foreground.

Photo 7.

Modern addition to the Custom House - recently completed. Overlooking the inner harbour and facing the Parliament Buildings and the Empress Hotel means great views at a high cost. Penthouse went for $10.8 million.

Photo 9.

Behind the Empress Hotel you have the Crystal Gardens (formerly a salt water swimming pool for many decades). The yellow crane is the excavation for Telus Ocean office building.

Opened in 1925 “Its 250,000-odd gallons of sea water were piped from the ocean at Dallas Road. As it entered the pool, the water was warmed by heat generated by the Empress Hotel’s laundry, which at that time stood immediately to the north.” Source: https://www.focusonvictoria.ca/victo...rystal-garden/

It’s now part of the Victoria Convention Centre, and many may remember when it was a tropical garden with animals like pink flamingos and tiny monkeys.

Photo 10.

Beacon HIll Park starts at the edge of downtown and extends to the ocean. Below the cliffs are beaches not visible in this shot from the pathway which is popular with walkers, joggers, and dogs.

Zoomer nice Victoria set, I've only been to your city one time for my sisters wedding but loved how walkable it was. Jealous of your spring flowers.

thanks TD and ME - yes Victoria is a walkers paradise no doubt about that. All those pics for Feb were taken within a 15 minute walking radius from my place. I don’t own a vehicle - no need for it here and the bus service is very good.

Back in 2019 BC Hydro ‘banned’ the practice saying it covers potential pole degradation from being discovered and that the poles need a paint free space near the bottom for moisture to escape. For a while it seemed to slow down, but it’s been about 15 years of these being painted and it appears to be on the relentless march again, now coming into the outer edges of downtown after having taken over all the poles of Fernwood, much of Oaklands, Fairfield, North Park, etc, etc. Most are just colourful, quirky, some painted to kids, but there are some real artistic gems out there too. My favourite is the pole with the painting of Mother Theresa and David Bowie, lol.

Any and all pictures of Beacon hill are complete gold! One of the most beautiful parks in Canada! Make sure to take some pictures of the Garry Oak a beautiful tree only in Victoria and Parksville if memory serves me correctly?

Wonderful photos Zoomer. You do so well in capturing Victoria... such a gift. I've never noticed the painted poles before. Probably because I rarely walk around downtown and always driving here or there. As mentioned I should make some time to get some springtime photos... flowers and blossoms etc. Maybe this weekend.

Hey Sunset - here’s some good info on Gary Oaks, and endangered species largely because of urban development.

“Garry oak is the only species of oak that is native to British Columbia. Its range is limited to a very narrow strip of sub-Mediterranean rain-shadow climate that extends down the eastern margin of Vancouver Island and throughout the southern Gulf Islands in BC, as far south as the San Joaquin valley in California.” Source

And here’s a pic I took of a Gary oak meadow on the grounds of the Government House. Mainly younger trees in this view:

Gary Oak Meadow - Government House, Victoria BC, Feb 23, 2023. by JohnnyJayEh, on Flickr

Another person’s pic of one here in Oak Bay:

Gary Oak by josullivan.59, on Flickr

And a very typical Gary oak meadow - they like rocky dry grassland areas:

gary oak by Olaf Niemann, on Flickr

And because you asked for it, lol - another picture I too, of Beacon Hill park with a Gary oak visible in behind the shrub.

Another one of Beacon Hill Park:

And thanks GS, appreciate the high praise! I didn’t take many pics really in February, hopefully more in March. As for the poles, just look as you drive by (well, don’t crash into one), and especially in Fernwood. There’s even a Instagram account dedicated to photographing them - The Painted Poles of Victoria.
