High Line Moynihan Connector’s Superstructure Begins To Take Shape In Midtown West, Manhattan

Construction is taking shape on the High Line Moynihan Connector, a nearly 1,200-foot-long extension of the High Line that will connect the elevated park with the five-building Manhattan West complex in Midtown West. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in collaboration with James Corner Field Operations, the connector will comprise two 600-foot-long bridges built by Turner Construction Company. Work is proceeding under a $50 million public-private partnership between Empire State Development (ESD), Friends of the High Line, and Brookfield Properties, and will culminate in easier access to Moynihan Train Hall and Penn Station. The connector runs along West 30th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues and turns 90 degrees to the north at Dyer Avenue to reach the Manhattan West plaza above West 31st Street.

At the time of our last update in March, work was still progressing at ground level on the foundations for the support beams. Now a good section of the steel-framed bridge has been completed along West 30th Street.

The inverted trapezoidal concrete decking above slopes inward toward a series of paired steel columns that are mounted onto previously formed square footings. These vertical elements, along with secondary metal supports seen in some of the photographs below, will hold up a large amount of soil, trees, and shrubbery, irrigation pipes, and the pedestrian path.

Hudson River Tunnel Project Moves Ahead as States Agree to Share Costs
A project to build new tunnels from New Jersey to Penn Station moved a step closer to construction with an agreement between New York and New Jersey.

The agreement is a major milestone toward a goal of having federal funding in place by the end of 2022, with tunnel construction possibly starting in summer 2023. However, a former Federal Transit Administration official said a full funding grant agreement might not happen until 2024 because of the complexity of the work that remains and the size of Gateway’s cost.

Is this new area going to fit into the Penn station master plan? Hopefully these improvements are happening with it in mind!

Yes, this is the 33rd street corridoor. The main renovations and rebuilding will happen after the LIRR terminal at Grand Central opens. The bids for the design were placed, and the wonner should be announced in the fall.

Wow, night and day. Most of that is just the higher ceilings and better lighting, though. The architecture is sleek but kinda boring.

Hopefully that upper portion of the white wall will get some art. NY's been pretty good about incorporating art into these megaprojects.

Or I assume there will be retail spaces behind that plywood wall that will break up the endless hallway effect...

They’re basically just giving us a peek at this phase of the LIRR concourse redevelopment. It’s the only corridor in Penn Station that leads directly into Moynihan (via the underpass). It’s still largely a construction mess, but when the retail space hidden behind the walls is revealed, it will begin to feel more familiar and even welcome to those who regularly use it. It’s technically not a part of the big Penn Station remodeling, but it’s progress people can feel and see. So now, in addition to Moynihan, there is a real sense of progress being made on this side of 8th Avenue.

Yeah I passed through that corridor a few months ago to check out Moynihan and the new "entrance cone" on 33rd St. I didn't realize they had that much space to work with above the ceiling.

Yeah, it’s a shame this wasn’t done sooner. I remember when the “found” the unused space to create the new NJ Transit entrance hall on 7th Ave, so it doesn’t surprise me. The K-Mart that was connected to the concourse was the largest in the country. I’m not sure what retail Vornado has lined up, I havent seen any plans lined up like they did for Moynihan.

But the real, dramatic changes are coming in the next few years.

McAslan + Partners designed the 2012 transformation of London's historic King's Cross Station, creating a 165-yard-long semi-circular departures concourse that integrates regional and intercity railroads with each other and with the London Underground while welcoming natural light from the sky through 1,000 glazed and translucent triangular roof panels.

"Since crews took a wrecking ball to the original Penn Station in 1963, generations of New Yorkers have been united in their call to build a new station worthy of New York," Governor Hochul said. "By approving the contract for the redesign of Penn Station, we move another step closer to getting it done. The transformation of Penn cannot come soon enough, and we look forward to building a world-class station that puts New Yorkers first, delivers a rider-focused transit experience, and a great neighborhood they deserve."

The FXCollaborative and WSP joint venture developed the Penn Station Master Plan unveiled last year that evaluated alternatives and created the preferred redesign plan for Penn Station as a single-level facility centered around a grand train hall with a 450-foot long sky-lit atrium between Madison Square Garden and 2 Penn Plaza. The design called for by the MTA's contract will advance that preferred alternative and will:

-Relieve overcrowding and improve passenger flow and orientation

-Improve safety by increasing platform and station egress and accessibility

-Alleviate the cramped, disjointed circulation areas with widened concourses and high ceilings

-Create a clear street presence that integrates with the surroundings

-Optimize retail and other revenue generation

-Integrate Penn Station with Moynihan Train Hall and the planned Penn Station Expansion

Pretty interesting info here regarding MSG.. for everyone killing Dolan and MSG..

Dolan was in talks with the Related Company about possibly moving MSG to the Hudson Yards... Gov. Hochul got involved and shot it down!!

A little off topic, but when Metro North to Penn is complete where will that fit in to Penn? Haven't been able to find too much info. I imagine theyre coming under the East River in the same tunnels as LIRR, will they just file into one of the current LIRR platforms? LIRR will need less when East Side Access opens. I can't imagine a whole separate Metro North concourse/area.

Also if they get to Penn Station Access Phase 2, again more trains coming in, same platforms/ waiting area as LIRR?

This was reported earlier, but it was more Related in talks with Dolan. The Governor really doesn’t have anything to do with it. If Dolan wanted to move MSG, he still could. Related’s interests is the same as it was when they tried to get MSG into Farley - remove the arena so they could get those supertall towers built on site. Hochul doesn’t need that complicating the states plan. (The state’s plan doesn’t touch those 4 msf of air rights above the arena).

As far as Adams goes, he has no say either. At best, the city council could decline to renew the license to operate an arena on site, but the site would still be Dolan’s. And that would be followed by those inevitable towers. But yeah, Adams can “talk” about moving it. That’s all it ever is anyway.

The LIRR trains diverted to GCT will make room for the Penn Access New Haven trains. The handful of Hudson Line trains that will come into Penn over the West Side Line/Empire Connection will by necessity alight at a current Amtrak platform as far as I know. Details of Phase 2 will come into focus as it gets closer too reality.

The facility will also have an underground connection to the 34th Street-Herald Square subway station! Therefore also a direct link with the PATH!!!

That’s the thing that’s been held up waiting for the 15 Penn development. The underground connection is already there, it just hasn’t been opened in a few decades. Vornado is supposed to reopen and expand it. But now they are trying to determine if they want the connection at the current location, or move it to the south side of the block. I don’t know why we can’t have both.

^ Whatever is bigger and more spacious, but.yeah theres no reason they couldn't restore a no nonsense Gimbels passageway AND build a new retail arcade passageway on the south side.
