The Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) yesterday unveiled its new tilting train car, which will be used to enhance transportation capacity on the Eastern Line.

Great videos of the new TRA cars, Coyett. They look unbelievable compared to the trains I rode as a kid in the 90s.

Taipei Metro Xinyi Line

I posted these in the Taiwan regional forum, but I figured they'd be nice to share here too. Flickr user hiroshi_lin has some great pictures of the new Xinyi Line. The first segment, opened November 24, 2013, is an extension of the existing Danshui Line, which connects three existing stations and adds four new ones. It notably includes a new station at Taipei 101, serving the southern end of the Xinyi District. Here are just a few of hiroshi_lin's Flickr pictures:

I remember reading that Taipei MRT Blue line and THSR share the same tunnel to/from Nangang spur that connects their respectively main tunnels. Does anyone know how they manage the signaling and direction of travel issue since the two systems run in opposite direction?

I have been curious about this but I have not been able to google my way to an answer. Taiwan is fascinating place for railroad fans because of all the mixed gauges, systems, and direction of travel. As far as I know, it is the only country where the mainline and local metros run in opposite directions on a system-wide scale.

Tracks don't cross each other I think? I remember seeing the Blue line from the THSR heading to Kaohsiung.

As for countries which local metros run in opposite directions, France.
