Cladding going up on the front. This being DAS, it's not surprising it doesn't look as good as the render, but it's not bad at all. It's also quite dirty and dust-covered. Could look better when it is clean and the dark color is more clear.

Hyatt Centric tops out in Philadelphia

A new $125 million Hyatt Centric under development at 17th and Chancellor streets in Philadelphia, marked a construction milestone with a topping out.

The final steel beam was raised on the 13-story, 190,000-square-foot building that is a block away from Rittenhouse Square and adds to a list of new hotels that will open over the next two years in Philadelphia. Eleven new hotels are scheduled to open in between now and 2020 in Center City. Those properties combined will add more than 2,000 new rooms to the market.

That’s a spike in the number of room when compared to recent years. Between 2014 and 2016, three new properties with 97 rooms combined opened in Philadelphia, according to data from analytics firm STR. Those numbers sharply rose in 2017 and 2018, when 11 hotels with 1,089 rooms opened in downtown Philadelphia.

Hyatt Centric will have 322 hotel rooms. It caters to millennials and is deliberately located in the heart of the city where restaurants and attractions are within walking distance. The building is rising on a narrow site that once housed Little Pete’s restaurant. An entity affiliated with Hyatt Hotels Corp. paid $25 million for the property.

The structure extends the length of Chancellor Street and will include a fitness center, event, lounge and meeting spaces as well as below-grade parking for 220 vehicles. It is scheduled to open in the summer of 2020.

I think this is going to end up falling under the good but super-forgettable and definitely-not-aging-well infill like the Pod Hotel project up the street.

It's not really a huge issue b/c both are so wedged into the city scape that their vertical influence is barely noticeable - but both will be awesome at the street level. Anyone try Condesa yet?

Spent the better part of the morning working remotely from El Cafe/Condesa - while the outside of POD is definitely budget engineering, the design team did a stunning job on the fit-out of the cafe and restaurant. (No surprise, coming from the minds behind Suraya).

Nice, its streetscape presence is awesome. Probably the coolest thing to happen to Ludlow Street since the puritans raided all those rub and tugs nearby years ago

There's a retractable roof on the 11th floor of the Pod Philly Rooftop Bar. Pretty cool. This is probably our first retractable roof on a roof top bar too. Nice!

Went with the SO to the bar tonight. The floor level of this hotel is top notch. The rooftop was nearly as good. Even with the roof in place, it felt almost completely outdoors with the enormous windows thrown open.

The margs and mezcal were good too. I'd give Mission the nod for margaritas, Pod the nod for Mezcal.

I never expected the 'back side' of the hotel to win any beauty contests, but what looks like the nearly finished end result is just as close to being ugly without getting to that camp as is possible. It's more then just boring. On one hand you don't see it that much from Locust St. but if one is looking at the church, and if your walking how can you not look at it, this dull backstop to the view is unfortunate. Is it better then the view of the garage?

It is worse than the view of the garage. That was not tall enough to be visible from Locust. DAS really irritates me. Moreso than any other company, its renders are not trustworthy. The end product always has some component with a puke color and texture that differs from the render in a material way. Cambria is another example. While the hotel render for the building to replace Midtown diner looks really nice, I have no confidence it will be given that it's theirs.

Unfortunately for many architects its cash for trash, they've given up the art and its just a job.

^ Well said. Beauty matters. That facade is not much better than the box it came in. I wouldn't have been THAT hard to give it a little interest/definition.

The Harper in Rittenhouse is probably their best high rise project to date. But, let's just say they are not on the same level as SOM, Foster and Partners, Snohetta or other top tier architects, at least not in any projects completed to date. And their projects aren't featured in Architectural Digest. But, glad to see they are getting work in the Philly area. I'm sure money has to do with some of the design, but hope to see them do more work in Philly and up their design game.
