To each his own I guess. Toronto's loose planning certainly beats the tower on a one or two storey podium model. We have those too but, we aren't limited to that. It's all about maximizing density in an agreeable height. It means strong streetwalls whether its a 60 storey tower on Bay or a mid rise along King.

As the rendering currently stands this development is terrible.

The white outline border on the tall building gives a direction they should build from. I would far rather see a white and dark blue glass contrasting design, getting rid of all of the orange and grey blocks. Go pure white and dark blue glass on the whole residential portion of the building, using a darker grey stone/brick mixing with the white and glass at podium level. Add the balconies, add some texture to the outer surface with window insets and balconies and we can get to something like below pretty quickly.

That is what retro looks like when it does not completely suck and is done right, not this Westbrook monstrosity.

The tallest building should remain as a single tall block. Simply add balconies, add some texture and diversity with actual variations in window placement, shape and design.

The building on the south should start 1 story in height below the level of the eastern building, as you move west the building should start tapering down in steps 1 story at a time to give the building a less blocky appearance and add more light to the pedestrian/grass area near the LRT. This also adds decent west facing patios to units on that side. The building should end on the west side about 4 stories lower then it is on the east.

The northern building also needs a couple steps down as you move to the west, starting at the angled turn in that building, in effect have the first step right at the turn in the building with a patio there for the top floor unit immediately to the east. The building should then has another couple steps down as you move to the west with patios at the steps. This building should end about 3 stories lower on the west than it is on the east and the taper should all occur after the half way point. This gives the units on that side a decent patio with a good view over the open public space and it gives the pedestrians there a WAY more attractive building to see with the tapered edges and patios.
