I recall the terrible experience at the NY venue ages ago!
I was horrified to see one in downtown Philadelphia years back.

Glad they are not in the suburbs!!

Looks atrocious. NY, stop building ugly hotels, thanks. Times Square shouldn't be a dumping ground for bad architecture, the place could be awesome with futuristic designs surrounded by signs and lights.. waste.!

If you created this thread, is it possible for you to edit the title?

I respectfully disagree. Whilst I agree the design is nothing spectacular, a wall of purple light 40-something floors high fits in well with the Times Square theme.

Did you know that Hard Rock Cafe Inc (includes the hotels and restuarants) is owned by the Seminole Tribe in Florida? I always thought that was kind of interesting. I didn't think the brand was doing well within the US but if they're building new towers like this maybe I was wrong.

Looks like Extell will build another hotel nearby.

Gary Barnett’s Extell Development Company bought 4-story 32 W. 48th St., former home to the Plaza Arcade diamond mini-mall, for $40 million, and at the same time closed on title to several adjacent buildings an air rights to another. The deals popped up in city records Friday night.

“We now have everything we need to build,” Barnett said on Sunday. Tentative plans call for a hotel with a “few hundred keys” and stores, he said.

The purchases totaled $85 million. Extell also signed a $63.8 million mortgage spreader agreement with Bank of the Ozarks for the six adjacent properties — 30, 32, 36 and 38 W. 48th St. and 25 and 27 W. 47th St. The new project will connect West 48th Street with the 47th Street diamond block.

Barnett said demolition leading to construction should begin within six months. The plan will apparently spare famed Szechuanese restaurant Wu Liang Ye at No. 36, from which Extell only bought air rights.

Silence at Hard Rock Hotel site as construction stalls

Quote:
An eerie silence has fallen over the Hard Rock Hotel site at 159 W. 48th St., which Extell is developing for Hard Rock International.

Work has oddly paused since plans for the 37-story project were approved by the Department of Buildings in February. A foundation is in place, but only a single security guard has been visible at the location for the past several weeks.

Extell wouldn’t comment on the record. A source said Gary Barnett’s powerful company was still in the process of finalizing a contract with a new construction manager, AECOM Tishman — although the name has been posted on the fence for months.

Hard Rock Hotel Readies For Construction At 159 West 48th Street In Times Square

Quote:
The construction crane has been assembled at the site of the future Hard Rock Hotel at 159 West 48th Street, signaling that work is set to commence on the Times Square development. Located between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue, the 225,000-square-foot, 445-room hotel is being designed by Berg + Moss Architects and developed by Extell in partnership with Hard Rock International. The plot measures 13,000 square feet and has yet to see the superstructure rise above street level.

According to renderings, the hotel should consist of a relatively tall tower with significant prominence over the neighboring buildings. The main southern elevation will be covered in glass and the Hard Rock logo will be emblazoned at the very top, just below the roof parapet. The logo will also appear on the eastern elevation, above a lower setback. Hotel amenities will include a rooftop lounge and bar, a restaurant, a lobby lounge, and an underground speakeasy.

The Hard Rock Hotel joins a recent flurry of construction in Times Square. Other nearby projects that are ongoing or recently completed include the TSX Hotel at 1568 Broadway, which just across the street from the Edition at 20 Times Square, the renovation of interiors and exterior of the Times Square Theater at 215 West 42nd Street, and the Margaritaville Resort at 560 Seventh Avenue.

No completion date has been announced yet for the Hard Rock Hotel.

Construction Appears To Stall On Hard Rock Hotel At 159 West 48th Street In Times Square

Quote:
YIMBY checked in on 159 West 48th Street in Times Square, the site of the first Hard Rock Hotel in New York City, where work appears to have stopped. Thick planks of wood can be spotted covering the exposed steel rebar protruding from the completed reinforced concrete foundations. The project is designed by Berg + Moss Architects and is being developed by Extell and Hard Rock International.

The construction crane was previously installed back in June, and since then more of the foundation walls were finished. None of the core walls and sub-level columns and floor slabs have been formed yet.

The site is located between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue, just off Times Square. The 225,000-square-foot hotel will yield 445 rooms upon completion. The main rendering shows this will become a fairly tall superstructure with a sleek glass curtain wall on the main southern profile featuring long corner balconies and wrap-around glass on the lower floors. The Hard Rock logo will be conspicuously placed and illuminated atop the hotel floors and the proposed outdoor rooftop lounge and bar, which would likely be among one the highest rooftop bars in New York City. There will also be a restaurant, a lobby lounge, and an underground speakeasy.

No completion date for the Hard Rock Hotel has been announced yet.
