Shakespeare & Co. bookstore in Rittenhouse Square is closing. Its owner cited COVID’s impact on business.

Quote:
For the booksellers and staff at Shakespeare & Co., parting is such sweet sorrow.

At least for now.

Although the Rittenhouse Square bookstore, cafe, and publisher has already shrunk its operating footprint and will close its doors sometime in the next month, this isn’t necessarily goodbye forever.

“Overall, it’s been a good experience, and we’re looking to remain,” said owner Dane Neller.

For now, though, the store — which already has closed its cafe and upstairs portion — will shut down completely, another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the bookseller’s website lists a last date of May 12, store manager Michael Fortney said he’s “not exactly sure” when closing day will be. It depends on how quickly inventory — all of which is marked down by 30% — sells.

If brisk business on Saturday was any sign, that day might come sooner rather than later.

“It’s a great market,” Neller said of Philadelphia. “Very urbane, very educated, lots of readers.”

Shakespeare & Co.’s lease on Walnut Street is up in mid-May, and while Neller wouldn’t discuss the terms, he was clear he wouldn’t renew it. He also would not say what his plans are for the five part-time employees there.

Neller said he hopes to stay in Philadelphia, though he’s not sure where. Shakespeare & Co.’s next location has to be close to readers, well clear of the competition, and with rent at the right price, Neller said.

Temple University planning to develop 3 new buildings on campus, expand athletic facilities

Quote:
As Temple University embarks on its first major fundraising campaign since 2009, President Jason Wingard has a long list of priorities – including development of at least three new buildings on the school's North Philadelphia campus.

Temple's new president, a former vice dean at the Wharton School of Business, is already targeting a few capital projects and hopes to build new homes for some of Temple's premier schools.

Among them is the College of Public Health, which currently has its administrative offices in the Bell Building at 12th Street and Montgomery Avenue. Its eight departments have offices and research labs across Temple's North Philadelphia campus.

Wingard also said there are plans for a new building to house both the Klein College of Media and Communication and the Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts. Most classes in the Klein College are held in Annenberg Hall. Temple's Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts holds classes mainly in Annenberg Hall and the Tomlinson Theater, which are in the same building complex and date back to 1968.

New buildings for the College of Public Health and for the Klein College of Media and Communication and Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts are board-approved projects with funding in place, but they are still in the early planning stages. Between the two projects, the university will use $170 million in state funding, a Temple spokesperson said, but both are still "a ways from even beginning."

In addition to the two academic buildings, Wingard said there will also likely be added athletic facilities. The school is working on development for an expansion on its Aramark STAR Complex, which currently has administrative buildings and an indoor turf field for Temple's athletic teams, as well as a weight room, climbing wall and outdoor track for campus recreation. Tentative plans for the expansion call for a tennis facility and administrative offices, but the project is also in the early planning stages. The complex originally opened in 2017 and cost $28.5 million.

I'm so glad to hear this. Does anyone know how many new construction projects they had in the past 10 years. The ones that comes to mind is the new library and a couple of projects on their health sciences campus in North Philly. Love to see them do more projects since we often hear more about projects with UPENN and Drexel, than Temple. Go Owls...LOL.

Off the top of my head, the library, Fox expansion, new fields at Girard, new athletic building on 15th, McGonigle renovation, and everything relandscaped.

I believe Morgan Hall was wrapped up around 2013/2014 as well, so technically that too.

There's been a lot of projects around Temple not funded by the University as well.

Really hope the library marked an architectural turning point and wasn't just a one-off.

I disagree. They messed up in that they didn't include nearly enough study space for students. The building is just essentially a warehouse for books with a cool robot.

Though, if you were just saying that Temple needs to stop building structures that look like they're made out of LEGO, I agree.

Pretty sure that's just subdivision, not demo. The bill to transfer the property to Alterra hasn't happened yet as far as I know.

Parcel A looks like a Demo Permit unless I'm reading it wrong:

I assume this is for the Fire Station

Noticed today that there was demo happening at 1224 Frankford Ave, finally after no activity for years and saw there were some recent demo permits pulled. This was previously planned to be a hotel but nothing came of it. Hope this means we'll see something happen here soon. With all of the activity in this area, a hotel makes a lot of sense still I think. Anyone know what we might expect here?

I saw recent on-site movement on this, too - let's hope things get moving soon.

I just can't get over how well that design works for that location.
