Who cares if it looks "ridiculous"?
Disregarding that fact that no one but the developers really know what it's going to look like (apart from the massing), it's a tourist attraction on Times Square, it looking "ridiculous" doesn't really matter

It matters to New Yorkers who walk by it all the time.

That's not just the massing anymore, that structural diagram shows detailed floorplates and column layouts-- basically the entire building before they install the facade system. ODA are no stranger to very weird, cantilevered envelopes, like at 251 West 91st, so I have a feeling the design might make a lot more sense once we see the facade. I'm hoping that the facade integrates the mast and decks so it's not just a pod-on-a-stick.

I think this design is more skyline worthy than Central Park Tower. I'm excited to get something that will have more active use for us than just looking at it. Sure, it will be jammed with tourists, but all of the observation decks are.

There's a lot going on, both at the top of the tower, and the top of the hotel, where there may be some type of ride. Also, a list of architectural drawings show a tower of 58 floors. There's still a lot to be cleared up.

Well, people always say they want something different, but freak out when they get it. This building is actually very tame in the lower half, but it will certainly become an icon, one that is distinctively in New York.

I’m curious about the shaft of the core, what type of cladding or lighting it will have.

I envision abseiling from the top to the hotel part.
Here in The Netherlands it's available at the Euromast in Rotterdam

Just wanted to share a bit of a fantasy design of my own for this site-- how I would interpret the massing prescribed by Extell, trying to make the mast-and-pod setup look a bit less silly:

Not sure how soon we'll get it. It took a while before we even got CPT renderings. Extell still seems to be developing this tower. The theater rights transfer of 81,000 sf is still in the works. Though only a formality, it still isn't complete. Also, the Imperial Theater will be expanding into lot 9, so that won't be a part of the footprint.

The transfer request shows a proposal for a zoning floor area of 722,000 sf (640,000 for the new building) with an FAR of 11.27 (which covers the whole zoning lot).

Current filing...

Well, you won't really have to look at them, (but you know you will).

If Hard Rock hadn't already built their tower this could have been their hotel shaped like a guitar.

Coincidentally enough, Extell owns the Times Square Hard Rock (The land, not the brand, obviously)
