Buffalo NY - The Stone Houses of Central Park

Central Park is a neighborhood in the City of Buffalo, between the North Park and Parkside neighborhoods in North Buffalo. The Onondaga Escarpment runs through this part of the City of Buffalo, and from the 1800s until mid 1900s there were several rock quarries located in the immediate area, from which many homes and buildings in the Central Park neighborhood utilized in their construction. The existing homes in the neighborhood date mainly from the 1890s to 1920s, and most were constructed with foundations of local limestone, and a significant number also used the limestone for the facades, mainly in the area West of Main Street.

I've always enjoyed rock houses, but the ones around here don't use stone blocks like those do. Here, you'll find houses constructed of regular old rocks mortared together for a rougher, but charming look. Those fancified city people with their citified stone blocks...

I may have been in that very house when I was in grade school - one of my classmates lived in one of the stone houses, but my memory of which particular one challenges me. I remember that the garage or carriage house was also stone, which makes me think this may be the one. I recall that there was a hand-carved mantle on one of the fireplaces that read "EAST WEST HAME'S BEST" which I thought was interesting and impressed me at the time. After visiting that house, I have always kept an interest in other stone houses.

This week I took a few pictures of interesting stone houses in the Deerhurst Park neighborhood of Tonawanda, a little north of the Buffalo city limits. Most of these date from the 1920s and later. They are near the end of my Tonawanda album. After I get a few more pictures from Tonawanda I am satisfied with I may post some here in the forum.

great photos! I love Buffalo's Central Park neighborhood.
Ben, this one has always been one of my fav Tudor-esque homes in Western NY. It has gotta be one of the most expensive sold prices in Central Park. According to Zillow it was built in 1935, 5bed/5bath and has 5,700 sq ft. It sold in November, 2022 for $1.69M. Previously it sold for $400k in December, 2011.
Beautiful nice sized yard (kinda rare for city properties) and pool
