Ahhh Schumacher..Birthplace of Frank and Pete Mahovolich.

A lot of Northern ON resource towns like Timmins and Suds are surprisingly multicutural.

In the European sense, yes. However, those days have long passed for Northern Ontario. Their descendants became more-or-less stock Canadian, even if they still retain a Finnish or Eastern European last name. Immigration to the area essentially ceased post-1980 due to the region's flagging economy.

In the 'visible minority' modern sense? Not really (a few hardy exceptions aside - think PK Subban's father), aside from some Indigenous residents and the start of modern changing Canada arriving in recent years. The improved economy has helped. Northern Ontario is still closer to 1982 than 2022 in terms of demographics today.

Yes..I should re-phrase that to "were multicultural"..The first couple of generations stuck around, but not so much from the 3rd to 4th generation on.

My own fault for even reminding people of it I suppose.

Funny, I could have sworn I posted this one. Downtown Vancouver at Bute & Melville. Nice house bracketed by rare (for Vancouver) early 20th century apartments. It is a shame it isn't better maintained.

The value is in the land, so of course it isn’t maintained!

Yep. I would assume it’s grandfathered in, so, legal even if current zoning would allow it.

It's kinda "surface lane parking" (lane is to the left of the photo), as the house and adjacent apartment are on the same legal lot and serves both properties. Both the house and apartment don't have a lane at the back and this is the only area for service vehicles etc. It is not a private surface parking spot for the "house".

It's slated for development with the adjacent "shacks" to the N-W along Melville Street.

What a shame. No doubt to be replaced with much more expensive rentals (even if they're tagged "affordable") or condos. I'm surprised there haven't been any studies on the disappearance of rooming houses in Vancouver, which used to offer a lot of cheap accommodation. Please tell me the brick apartment building isn't going. That would be a crime.

When this gets off the ground (TBD) I do not know if the replacements will go for the following rates (my last project with rental eviction downtown was 2017), but these replacement rates are current (2022):
Studio - $1,077
1-Bed - $1,216
2-Bed - $1,683
3-Bed - $2,293
