The Ace looks fantastic, inside and out! One of our friends is the chef (not executive!) in the restaurant and excited to try it out soon.

Both of those hotels are stunning! Well done! Quebec city continually impresses me with the way they balance new construction and heritage buildings. Toronto and Calgary could learn a thing or two.

The newly completed Library and Archives Canada Gatineau Preservation Centre II. Centre I next door was completed in the 90s and has a glassy hanger look (seen in the vaults picture).

The Preservation Storage Facility opened in 2022. Its construction allowed us to:
  • increase our storage capacity
  • provide the conditions needed for long-term preservation
  • keep Canada's documentary heritage secure

The building’s primary function is to provide efficient storage for archival records. It also has specialized work and consultation rooms.

The simple design maximizes usable space and allows for an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS). The building is energy efficient and sustainable. At the time of its construction, it was:
  • the largest automated archival centre in the world
  • the first net zero carbon archival centre in the Americas
  • the first federal facility built by Library and Archives Canada to meet the requirements of Canada's Greening Government Strategy standards

This building reinforces Library and Archives Canada’s (LAC) reputation as a leader in the global documentary heritage community.

The vaults

Six large vaults, totaling more than 21,000 cubic metres, store paper, microfilm and motion picture film.

The vault structure is made of concrete, a material that produces little dust and minimizes noise and vibration.

Automated building systems maintain precise levels of:
  • light
  • temperature
  • humidity
  • airborne particles

The building uses state-of-the-art fire prevention and suppression systems.

There are two distinct environmental conditions in the building. Vaults 1 to 5 containing paper are kept at 10°C and 40% relative humidity.

Vault 6 containing paper documents, microfilm and motion picture film is kept at 6°C and 30% relative humidity.

The automated system

Each vault has an automated storage and retrieval system. This system uses a lift and a crane controlled by our staff for the removal and return of documents to the vaults. The system operates in the dark and limits the opening of the vaults, which saves energy and maintains optimal preservation conditions.

Moving the collection

The transfer of documents and archives to the Storage Preservation Facility has begun. Learn about the enormous task of moving more than 590,000 containers into their new vaults.

That's really cool. There are automated warehouses that use similar systems, but with skids instead. One down the street from my workpace is a massive ~10 story building, that is basically a skin over racks from floor to ceiling. I looked it up later (the company is Conestoga Cold Storage), and they use similar types of robots the height of the whole building to automatically retrieve/store skids. I guess the system is especially advantageous for cold storage because they can lower the surface area of the building and keep cooling costs down.

Image from when they were adding an expansion:

They built a similar system in Calgary. I wondered what that blue scaffolding was for. Thanks for the info.

Edit: Curious if Attabotics (a Calgary company) was responsible for the robots.

The Workshop - handsome little office building that was recently completed in Mount Pleasant:

Also across from the recent Main Alley development. Very Scandinavian-looking streetscape forming here: https://goo.gl/maps/WK5q5DExSsqRT1SV6

Article about Queen's Marque in Architectural Record with some nice photos: https://www.architecturalrecord.com/...axs-waterfront

I have not seen it in person yet but I get the impression it's one of the best developments in the city in terms of high quality details and the design of the public space. And a prominent local architect worked on the design. It looks rooted in the local style (e.g. relatively heavy sandstone masonry and granite as building materials, relatively tight resulting streetscapes with tall-ish/narrow streetwalls and passageways, finger wharf style layout), unlike some other projects.

A few smallish projects recently completed in Quebec City. Nothing too extravagant, it is conservative Quebec City after all!

Barrington Street in Halifax. Nothing major built on this block but there have been a lot of little changes over the years.

The far corner building on the foreground block doesn't look like much but it is an early concrete building from the 1910's and it is being renovated and expanded with two new upper floors. It might turn out to be great. The narrow 60's building across the street is good too, although it has lost a bit of its detailing and elegance over the decades.
