No respect for the city, is what I see. A prominent, postcard location deserves a design worthy of labeling a classic. This is a design that won't age well, and will probably be razed down 20 years down the line (hopefully earlier).

I'm confused by the YIMBY article stating this will be 551 feet tall

It's possible plans have changed, but not only does the rendering look taller than that, I also distinctly remember reading that this would be 800 feet when it was first announced

I still say it's just another version of its future neighbor, but I'm not too thrilled about that one either...

This is an 800-900 ft. tower, per renderings. Initial NB permits were prior to air rights transfers.

This project is total trash.

Big net negative for the city's architecture.

What we lost was much, much more valuable than what we'll get.

Here’s what the $10M-$20M NYC investment sales market looked like last week

Quote:
In the world of mid-market New York City investment sales last week, Sterling National Bank shed another Queens building and HFZ Capital Group dropped $18.6 million for a property in NoMad, according to filings recorded last week with New York City’s Department of Finance.

1.) HFZ Capital Group picked up a five-story, mixed-use building in NoMad for about $18.6 million. The seller of 18 West 30th Street was Jamak Realty, Inc.

The property is just one piece of an assemblage Ziel Feldman’s company is putting together on the block, where it plans to build a nearly 600,000-square-foot office building designed by architect Bjarke Ingels.

Pile driving has begun at 29th & Fifth, a towering new office building envisioned by HFZ Capital Group (Slide). To deliver 600,000 square feet of Class A office space to NoMad by 2022, the building is designed with 13,400-sf floor plates, accessory terraces, and a landscaped plaza at its base.

I'm sorry, it's just so mediocre. No need for it like that.

Since this design is not even on BIG's website, it's not clear that it's up to date.

Locals suspect church plan is back door to larger office tower

June 6, 2019
RYAN DEFFENBAUGH

Quote:
The applicant says it is a minor variance for a small change at a landmarked church. The community board fears it's a back door to a blockbusting tower.

The conflict spilled into view Wednesday night as the land use committee at Manhattan Community Board 5 recommended the city reject an application for a variance from Marble Collegiate Church in NoMad.

The variance itself is small: It would allow the church to build a roughly 1,400-square-foot connector to an office tower set to rise in the lot next door, at 3 W. 29th St. But before the city's Board of Standards and Appeals approves it, the community board said officials should demand more information on what exactly the office developer, HFZ Capital Group, plans to build.

The confusion, as described by the board, stems from reports that HFZ was considering a 64-story residential building as recently as 2016. The plan is now for a 34-story office building, which appeared as a glass tower in renderings shown to the committee last night.
Quote:
Marble Collegiate Church sold part of the land and air rights to HFZ for the project and is a partner on the venture. The church would have a new fellowship hall in the building, which would be connected to the church under the terms of the variance.

Without HFZ in the room, church representatives were left to answer for the developer's plans—and whether they might change again.
Quote:
"It is a little away from this variance strictly, but there is this big development that is going to come to our block that we have assumed at some point to be a 64-story building, almost as tall as the Empire State Building," said Layla Law-Gisiko, acting chairwoman of the committee. "We need to understand what is going to come."

Asked why the plans changed, church representative Meenakshi Srinivasan said she can speak only for Marble Collegiate on the variance, not the developer on the larger project. An HFZ representative could not be reached for comment before publication. Listings on HFZ's website brand the planned building as 29th & 5th, which it says will be marketed to technology and advertising companies.
Quote:
The BSA will have final say on the variance. The tower, as proposed, is allowed under current zoning. Community board members want the city review to take into account the entire project, not just the small connector.

"The larger issue by far is that we get this piecemeal approach and these tiny little narrow things. And then, three years later, we sneeze and we have a new 88-story tower and lot mergers that do not see the light of the day until the foundation is being laid," said Clayton Smith, second vice chair of the board. "This is our only opportunity to have a public moment to bring awareness."

Foundation Work Begins For 29th & 5th, BIG’s Office Skyscraper At 3 West 29th Street In NoMad

Quote:
Excavation work has commenced for 29th & 5th, Bjarke Ingels Group‘s proposed skyscraper at 3 West 29th Street in NoMad. Excavators, piling machines, and other construction equipment are in use at the site, which is located just five blocks south of the Empire State Building. Developed by HFZ Capital Group, the future 34-story, 551-foot-tall office tower will yield 300,000 square feet and incorporate shear glass walls and staggered outdoor terraces along the eastern elevation.

Work is currently in the very early stages, but excavation should progress to a considerable depth by the end of the year. The reinforced concrete foundations will follow next, and the structure will likely rise above street level in 2020. A centralized concrete core and structural steel shell is the most probable makeup of the superstructure.

Though the tower will stand 37 feet shorter than its nearby residential neighbor, Sky House, the renderings from BIG show the new skyscraper dwarfing the neighboring structures, presumably through the use of forced perspective. Nonetheless, 29th & 5th will still make an architectural mark on the cityscape in this quickly rising neighborhood, and provide a foil to the Empire State Building. The Art-Deco masterpiece by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon has gracefully anchored and visually dominated the center of the Midtown skyline for the past 88 years.

A completion date for 29th & 5th has not been formally announced yet, but sometime in 2021 or 2022 seems likely.

YIMBY Forums is getting the building specs all wrong, but nice update nonetheless.

Here are actual building specs:

Looking forward to this tower, which has taken forever, and will complement 262 Fifth nicely. A supertall and near-supertall.

no, YIMBY is reporting what is on the permits. HFZ are being shady about this.

http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/Jo...ssdocnumber=01

"near supertall"? Heaven forbid, this design is just as egregious as 262 Fifth.
