Can you clarify the above? Is this net Asian population growth, by ancestry reported, by MSA, for 2010-2020? Some of the numbers seem intuitively off.

Kinda weird how Detroit has more South Asian growth than even Chicago, but its East Asian growth is pathetic.

Metro Detroit attracts a ton of Indians, but surprisingly few Chinese or East Asians.

Also, Cleveland and Pittsburgh have barely any Asian immigration. You'd think all the major universities and medical centers would drive some growth.

Dallas surpassed the Bay Area for 2nd place for South Asian growth... Also not much Chinese immigration to the Sunbelt other than Dallas.

Yeah, Dallas has crazy South Asian growth. I had no idea Dallas was getting such huge Asian numbers, leaving Houston and especially Atlanta in the dust.

It looks like a South Asian "Big 3" is developing. NY-NJ, Bay Area, and the Metroplex.

I think that the numbers will probably look a bit different when the official 2020 Census results are released and we can do a comparison with the 2010 Census.

Aren’t the drivers and nature of Asian immigration to the US dramatically different from Mexican immigration?

I say Mexican rather than Hispanic or Latin American on purpose, because the nature and basis of immigration from, say, Brazil is obviously different as well. You can probably consider Central America along with Mexico however.

But what drove the massive immigration boom from Mexico in the 1990s was a dramatic disparity in job opportunities and wages for unskilled labor. Incidentally, there were economic studies that I read in business school that basically said this was a major enabler of the 90’s boom in the US, by keeping a lid on wage growth and inflation when otherwise the Fed would have needed to tighten monetary policy much earlier.

There is less disparity today, between the US and either Mexico or China/SE Asia. But my instinct is that, because of the vastly higher cost and logistical challenges of reaching the US from China as opposed to Mexico, those immigrants have always been “aiming higher” so to speak - seeking a better life and more opportunities, not just minimum wage work, and so a closing of the gap in say factory wage rates won’t have as pronounced an effect on the flow of immigrants.
