Erie, PA Waterfront

Erie is located on the shores of Lake Erie in Northwestern Pennsylvania. It is the State's only lake port as well as the fourth largest city in Pennsylvania.

I had some time yesterday so I decided to take some pictures of a beautiful September day along Erie's bayfront.

All pictures were taken by me and are copyrighted as such. If you wish to use them you may contact me for permission.

This is my first time posting pictures on this thread. I look forward to any comments or constructive criticism you may have.

The pictures were taken using a Kodak EasyShare C713 with 3x zoom lens.

Enjoy!

Erie from the Bicentennial Tower (210 feet up)

Parking Garage, Bayfront Sheraton and walkway leading to Convention Ctr

Bayfront Convention Center (looks a little like the S.S. Titanic)

210 feet is a long way down...

The east side of Erie

Erie's $48 Million Hotel on the Bay

Erie building's (and sailboats) from the Convention Ctr parking lot

Erie's $100 Million Convention Ctr. entrance

Sheraton from across the Inlet

Erie's Bicentennial Tower (and an unlucky Boater who ran out of gas )

Convention Ctr public walkway

Nice day for a boat ride

Looking East

Presque Isle Bay is a great place to go sailing...

I like that convention center building. It's a good scale for a city that size and the design reflects Erie's geography. It's better than most of those big boxes cities build. Nice thread.

Nice shots. I was up in Erie over the Labor Day Wknd... nothing like summers on Lake Erie... the weather is perfect in the summer there. The Sheraton has nice bar with outdoor seating on the water. They need to finish that parking garage though... it looks awful without the exerior "skins". Hopefully, we'll see more bayfront development soon. That big grassy parking area is owned by a this greedy developer bastard who is just sitting on it for spiteful reasons (he was denied as the developer for the conv. ctr. hotel). I hope the city and/or county take it by eminent domain, as has been talked about.

Good to see Erie. I can't recall the last time we had a good skyline shot or any good lakefront shots of the city. Nice to see both here in this thread.

Nice to see Erie here. I have to say it's about the largest city near Lake Erie that I have not yet seen in person.

It looks nice around the waterfront and in select areas, but much of the city is as gritty as gritty gets.

Those are actually central bayfront shots of the city, not lakefront. The downtown area, the lower west side of the city, and part of the lower east side front Presque Isle Bay, not Lake Erie proper.

I can't for the life of imagine how city planners would allow prime waterfront real estate to be delevoped as, of all things, a parking garage. Poor planning here and a wasted opportunity.

^ Yeah, that was a big ordeal locally. Thing is, the hotel required a parking facility, and being situated on a narrow plot surrounded on 3 sides by water... where to put it? Originally, the hotel was to be built atop the parking garage... that would have been ideal, but was deemed too expensive as it was a publicly-funded project. At least there's a bar in the parking garage.

Great photos. Attempting to get down to the waterfront during winter is an interesting experience though, due to the fact that the sidewalks are not plowed. But seeing the bay covered in ice is worth the trip.

I saw the silver "boat" docked in the background over Labor Day. It's the Point Counterpoint II designed by architect Louis Kahn and built near the "Point" in Pittsburgh... it's a floating concert hall owned by the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. It tours around the Great Lakes and Eastern Seaboard in the summer... pretty cool
