It's strange; Miami has such a ho-hum skyline. Nothing particularly definitive about it. No tall building punctuates the skyline. No iconic gem grabs your attention. And still, whenever I see it I recognize it instantly.

I'm not saying that Miami has no tall buildings or nice architecture. Just saying that it's not like New York with the ESB or Frisco with the TransAmerica building. Kind of more like Vancouver with an endless sea of non-descript apartment towers.

That’s because Miami is mostly residential towers and not corporate HQs. Even speculative office space tends to be kind of blah.

On the distant horizon across Lake Ontario, is that New York state barely visible, or just clouds? I've been told that you can see the Toronto skyline from New York state shoreline, so I guess it works the other way. Chicago skyline is visible from Michigan on a clear day. Skyline shots from across big bodies of water are cool. Wonder if you could see New York from Philadelphia and vis versa on a really clear day from a tall building? Boston from New York?...doubt it. But maybe Boston is visible from Provincetown on Cape Cod?

Actually, that's Ontario. If you have a good eye, you can spot a couple of hotels from Niagara Falls (ON) on the left-ish side of the photo.

Gorgeous shot.

I realize L.A. is a very, very complicated, massive creature.. and if you can't master earthquake engineering issues, you can't build.

But on a skyscraper forum I'm always suprised to see L.A. in the top lists. Philly beats it.

If urban density plus skyline was a prerequisite .. lol.. a dozen towers wouldn't make the cut. Freeways etc.

But photogenic for sure.

LOL... we ain't perfect but generally we're nice (lol) and a bit less competitive towards our fellow citizens. Though we did bring bruising hockey to the world.

We fail sometimes but still try to enjoy the incredible diversity here - food, friends, fashion, politics... evolving.

If someone says "I'm from Ghana but proud to be here now"... most of us applaud and remember how lucky we are.

No. Take the tallest 50 buildings between Philly and LA combined. 30 of them are in LA. Core LA density holds up well against Philly.
