Windmills are only cool if there are hundreds of them. At least pair this one up.

ILYR that's so damn cool how you did that mock-up so quick.

Guys don't kid yourselves - this idea is one of the coolest in Canadian cities on several levels:
1) Adds coolness and elegance to the skyline. (Think windmills are clunky? Take a look at most downtown buildings.
2) Being right downtown makes a bold statement around Winnipeg's commitment to green energy as part of its core energy infrastructure.
3) It lessens the environmental footprint of the Forks (from what I heard, this size of mill can power 150000 homes. This means the Forks (and maybe other downtown buildings) can be self-sufficient.
4) The mill would make the Forks more economically sustainable too (the Forks spends TONS each year on energy costs in their ancient brick market buildings).
5) And last but not least, worried about the noise? The City of Winnipeg's giving you a hummer. Quit complaining.

Once again, Winnipeg is hot and if I could have sex with a city it would be Winnipeg.

Winnipeg had better not drop the soap in the shower.

I have to agree with the majority on here, it would look great. Certainly different. But easily something other Canadian Centres don't have in their large urban plazas. For all intents and purposes ...a couple windmills would be look great at Ass. Park. Just my opinion though.

With the likely possibility of an 80 metre tall windmill, to co-incide with the very large Human Rights Museum, and the already existing attractions like Can West Global Park, the Esplanade Riel, Manitoba Children's Museum, Forks Market/Johnston Terminal, River Walk, unique restaurants, clubs (in the summer), river recreation (summer and winter), walking paths, sitting areas, etc. right on the south east bank of downtown would be nothing short of phenomenal. A multi-day tourist attraction and symbol of civic pride.
Toronto already has one...it's just a giant eyesore in my opinion.

I would like to see it on the point across from the forks marina, at least it won't interfere with the downtown skyline, I can just imagine how bad it could look if its in the wrong place! Imagine this , downtown skyline with a giant pole smack in the middle of it, like a lamp post, as it will appear larger, being set closer to the river vantage point, than the other office towers. Other than that, I don't mind the idea.

I think it would be awesome right in the middle of Canwest Global place as ILYR eluded to in his pic.

...ok, how about a massive foul pole?

It could pivot so it would suck air outward when the Goldeyes were at bat and blow it back when the visitors were.

I like the idea. Really cool and a good message. Personally, I wouldn't have that exact placement. Instead you could stagger them on both sides of the River, or even spread them around the city. It would be pretty awesome to see skyline "bursting" out of a relative sea of windmills. Contrary to some, I just love watching them slowly turn, especially when there are a lot around (and at different positions in their rotations!).

You wouldn't want more then one downtown. The whole purpose is to get people talking and asking questions and to show to the world that you city is forward thinking when it comes to the environment. When they first put one in in Toronto it was nothing more then an oddity, now people are asking why don't we build more?

What would be really interesting is if they could could put on obersation deck on it and people could walk up it.

I agree with lighting it up and an observation deck if possible ...as well, I wonder if it's possible to set fireworks off of it on occasions?

I think a windmill would have a different presence in Winnipeg then it would in Toronto, especially with it being at The Forks. Winnipeg's big plan is to "go green". As already stated, the windmill symbolizes that. Just my opinion, but with the apparent Human Rights Museum, it seems the Forks is less of a green-space and more of a forward-thinking/cultural area. With that being the case, I think a windmill is the order of the day.

Can you imagine a whole bunch of windmills lined up along the top of Signal Hill? Ultra-sweet...

Good on you Winnipeg. Do it!

Wow...I'm very surprised that people here are liking this idea!

Wind farms with windmills...cool.

Giant windmill in the middle of the city? Wow...eyesore!

In that picture that someone did up...is that honestly where they are thinking of putting it? Right downtown?
