Saskatoon is fat (yes, with an F)

...and so is the rest of the province:

http://healthandfitness.sympatico.ms...st+and+fittest

Regina is a hair below the national average, Saskatoon is 5 points above national average on the number of overweight/obese people.

Regina 58%
Saskatoon 64%
Saskatchewan 68.1%
Canada 59%

This is about as useless as the "Canada's most dangerous cities" exclusive.

That could be our new marketing slogan:

"Saskatoon; were too fat to be dangerous"

Keep in mind as well that it is based on BMI which does not differentiate between fat and muscle. Might all those Northern European ancestors and their big bone genes that bring our BMI up. Of course it could also be their perogies

As usual, Thunder Bay is number three. (I remember it being reported when this report came out.)

Be it crime or obesity, there isn't a malady in which Saskatchewan's cities do not best us.

TB will have it's day soon enough, or perhaps it won't...obesity is family tradition for some folks around here...or something

I like socialisthorde's explanation...Norwegians!

Oh, Thunder Bay has its fair share of fat people let me tell you. I saw one woman the other day on a scooter that looked like a 450lb sack of potatoes with a head. It was so sad.

BTW, lots of Northern Europeans here, too. I'm more than half Scandinavian.

Not really...not like 58% is much better than 64%. I did go with a title that would get attention though.

Whoa. before this goes too far, I wish to say that I did not intend to say that Norwegians or any other racial group tend to be fat. I was simply pointing out that BMI confounds fat with muscle and bone and that Northern Europeans not Norwegians, tend to be larger boned than say asians, and therefore our larger proportion of Northern Europeans might make us have a higher average BMI.

And even at that I was just joking. Really, I love Norwegians. Not Lutefisk though. Couldn't make me eat that stuff

^, but Norwegians are Northern Europeans...along with the Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, etc. I support your claim of BMI representing individuals with higher than average muscle mass, and I'm certain there is supporting studies documenting this phenomenon.

BMI is too complex to just put your height and weight into a formula for a one-size-fits-all solution. If you go strictly by BMI, most bodybuilders are obese. You have to put many other factors into it to get the larger picture of health.

Indeed. I was just tryign to say didn't mean to offend anyone with my post, as it was mostly made in jest. I meant to say that the people who settled the prairies tended to be from larger (not neccessarily fatter) races. On further consideration, I was really thinking more about Eastern Europeans than Northern Europeans anyway, but I will let this go now.

Keep in mind that the French have low obesity rates.
