West Loop doesn't have anywhere near the cancer of parking lots that River North did. It already feels cohesive in most parts. The only area that feels wide-open is between Kinzie and Carroll along the Metra tracks.

From a skyline perspective, This rendering alone shows how cohesive West Loop from the river to Morgan St is becoming. From a pedestrian perspective, Randolph St and Fulton Market are already pretty cohesive. The new developments on the western edge will really help solidify this. Washington Blvd and Van Buren St are also pretty cohesive, although they could do with more highrises and retail.

Probably too late now. The should have done it as they were rebuilding the on-ramps and redoing the circle interchange.

I posted this last summer. I imagine this summer will be even better. It'll be messy in spots with all the projects that are starting this spring, and the work ongoing. So if you want it to feel mostly "done", then 2024?

First, I was very impressed how cohesive the neighborhood now feels, how dynamic. Something happening on nearly every corner. So much infill, to the point that the few empty lots and old one story warehouses were the rare exception, not the rule. The scale of the midsize buildings is great. A cute little building going up on one corner on Randolph made me smile.
I walked through the Mews, great potential for that space. Hopefully they put in some artwork along the brick, I want to see it when it's filled out.

West End is massive and provides a great visual termination looking west, making the district feel enclosed. Seeing Salesforce rising to the east only adds to that.

It was hot and sunny but I managed to find lots of shade for my walk, without it feeling dark like in the loop. I want to spend an entire day there, just going street by street, exploring. So many changes.

Is there any other defined business district in the US that is undergoing a similar massive investment of construction capital? Brooklyn Navy yards, Long Island City and maybe Hudson Yards are they still actively developing?

Brickell in Miami for sure. Just generally all of downtown Miami though is white hot. NYC/Miami/Chicago are going to be the leading cites tower construction wise for the 2020s.

University City is basically Philly's version of West Loop, the Seaport District in Boston went from vacant lots to skyscrapers in a few years, midrises are being constructed all over DC, Atlanta's CBD's are rapidly evolving.

Inspire all this, Fulton Market is consistently listed as the fastest growing office district in the US

FM is the fastest growing office district in the same way the suburbs of Las Vegas took turns being the fastest growing cities in the US. There was literally no office space in FM five years ago. If growth is being calculated as a percentage increase as opposed to just total square footage added it's not surprising that it would rank near the top. With all the towers on the river I feel like more space has come online in the Loop. But a few million sq feet is a bit more negligible in an office district as established as the Loop. Admittedly I don't know what metrics they're using so this could be wrong
