I agree with that too. I wonder if BC should do this, they should make parts of the highway into a 2+1 highway like in Northern Ontario

It depends where. If the terrain’s very difficult already, one may as well build out all 4 lanes.

Makes sense

In Northern Ontario it definetely would work, but just that they have so much to do yet.

That would make sense around Greater Sudbury or as Interim phases of town bypasses

I think instead of twinning the current alignment of Hwy 17 in Ontario west of Thunder Bay to Sistonens Corner, I think it would be better to realign Hwy 17 to go alongside Hwy 102 near Thunder Bay. It would be more direct

BC is a different beast than northern Ontario as the traffic volumes are much higher. Most of the trans Canada in BC has 3-4x the traffic volume of 11 or 17 across northern Ontario.

BC will get twinned eventually, but it just is expensive and they have lots more to do

MTO definitely thought about it as the alignment via 102 would have shaved 16 KM off. Unfortunately, the people there said no. So now we ended up with a protected freeway corridor that would swing by Murillo, Kakabeka Falls, and Mokomon.
You’ll have to check the zoning maps from the township of Oliver-Paipoonge to see the details. MTO’s permit control zone map also shows it but to a much coarser detail.

Expensive? Yes.
The benefit-to-cost ratio is probably high enough to justify that though.
In Ontario, it’ll be equally expensive, but that ratio is so low that the map in my signature is pretty much just a dream. It’s as if I’ve pretty much drawn it up to show people that it may be doable.

Word on the street a double fatality. Chalk another up for this death highway. It's just sad at this point.

It’s sad indeed. Still, what are the particularly bad spots on that stretch?

Easy solution: variable speed limits depending on traffic volume, weather conditions and time of day.

Trans Canada Highway reopened after fatal collision near Rogers Pass

http://https://globalnews.ca/news/10190875/trans-canada-highway-closed-in-both-directions-near-glacier-national-park/

Anyone know more details about this crash (i.e. was it a head-on collision ?).

Trans Canada Highway Twinning in BC is "Finished" in the eye of the feds now. Highway twinning can't be anything but a "large road project."
Be safe on the half-upgraded goat track, people.

In a country as large as Canada, with weather as fickle as Canada's, Guilbeault's comments seem pretty tone deaf. This guy is both out of touch and out to lunch........

Yet another nail in the coffin of this Liberal administration.

Wow that comment from Steven Guilbeault is sure generating lots of backlash.
Realistically speaking though, is the federal coffer even in a good shape for anything these days…

Jesus christ. Where the fuck is the money going. It'll still be 1 lane each way.

It’s called waiting for a government that’s willing to blast rocks through the provincial park to make it 4 lanes. If not, we will have to bring back the trains at 15 ~ 20 minute frequency.

Meanwhile, N.L. contemplates using P3 to deal with its TCH twinning: https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7114715

Indeed.

It cost the Province of Ontario $174m in 2016 to build 14km of fully-divided Highway 69 freeway through Canadian Shield.

$162m for 2.6km of two-lane road? Yikes.
