Demolition Progressing For Solow’s 52-Story Skyscraper At 10-20 West 57th Street, In Midtown
Quote:
Demolition has been gradually progressing at 10-20 West 57th Street in Midtown, the site of a proposed 52-story skyscraper from Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Solow Realty & Development Group. Located on Billionaires’ Row between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue, the new development will rise 672 feet and contain 383,000 square feet, according to permits filed in February of 2019. The majority of the structure would be devoted to residential space, with 202,738 feet spread across 80 units.
Recent photos from Tectonic show that 20 West 57th Street, the westernmost structure on the plot, has been completely cleared since YIMBY’s last visit in November, when the building was still largely intact. This was the second portion of the property to be torn down, leaving only two structures on the eastern end of the lot to be razed. So far, no signs of demolition preparations are apparent on these edifices. They stand directly adjacent to the Crown Building, aka 730 Fifth Avenue, which is undergoing a partial hotel and residential conversion.
Details regarding the overall architecture and interiors of 10-20 West 57th Street have yet to be revealed, nor has any kind of rendering of the future skyscraper been released. The architectural height of 672 feet would be just 17 feet short of Solow’s eponymous 49-story building, which is just down the street to the east at 9 West 57th Street. Though considerably short of the supertall status enjoyed by neighboring towers on the street, the building will still make an impression on the skyline below Central Park and provide tenants with great views. The residences are planned to start on the 11th floor and culinate on the 50th floor.
The nearest subway is the F train, half an avenue to the west at the 57 Street Station. The N, R, and W trains are three blocks to the north by the Plaza Hotel.
No targeted completion date for 10-14 West 57th Street has been announced, but it will almost certainly be several years away.
