Hopefully they get the money up front and they get a sponsor the city can actually be proud of

the best of times, the worst of times: look at india with all its poverty, yet the world's tallest statue was built there 3 yrs ago. The best of times, the worst of times: more super talls in NYC than ever before, but the newer ones leave me cold....beyond whether they're full of vacant apts. Or sold apts that are never lived in....or the bldgs are a social, economic, political landmine. Plus, I think they give NYC's famous skyline a comic book or clownish look.

I found the new Brookfield Bunker Hill Tower's Twin

One Kemble Street (Space House) in London, England, designed by George Marsh in 1964

^ I think the Marina Towers in Chi town have the same feel. This is a nice building though.

How about Sunkist Center, or Disney/ABC Center? Both Sunkist and Disney are still based in L.A. area. Plus, doesn't Disney still own ESPN?

There is also that cylindrical condo building in Long Beach built in the 1960s. I think it used to be called International Tower. Is it still called that? This proposed building looks even better, plus it seems to be more oval (ellipsoidal) in cross section. Like the "Lipstick Building" in NYC where Bernie Madoff had his offices.

I see a few companies that still exist today. Edison, Anheuser Busch, Wells Fargo. The notable homegrown Fortune 500 being Pacific Mutual Life which is now Pacific Life in Newport Beach.

Redwood-inspired DTLA tower takes a small step forward

The 40-story building would rise at 11th and Hill

Steven Sharp
Urbanize Los Angeles
February 4, 2022

A proposed Downtown high-rise with a design inspired by California's redwood trees has taken a key step forward, following the publication of a Sustainable Communities Environmental Assessment for the project.

View looking south on Hill Street

The project, slated to replace a mid-century warehouse located at the southwest corner of 11th and Hill Streets in the South Park neighborhood, is being developed as a joint venture between Australian developer Crown Group, Magnus Property Pte Ltd., and ASRI. Under current plans, the two-story industrial building would make way for a new 40-story edifice featuring:
  • 319 one-, two-, and three-bedroom condominiums;
  • 160 TORS units;
  • 3,429 square feet of ground-floor restaurant space; and
  • 390 parking stalls on six above-grade levels and two basement levels.

The TORS units now introduced into the project refers to "Transient Occupancy Residential Structures," which could be leased for periods of up to 30 days. The developer had previously proposed a 160-key hotel within the tower.

View from 11th and Hill looking southwest

Designed by Koichi Takada Architects, with MVE + Partners serving as architect of record and RIOS as landscape architect, the glass-and-steel tower would culminate in a sculpted rooftop approximately 520 feet in height. A green wall is proposed to mask the building's above-grade parking, with open-air amenity terraces planned at its podium and roof levels. A swooping canopy planned above the sidewalk was inspired by Marilyn Monroe's windswept skirt in the film The Seven Year Itch.

Crown Group and its partners have previously announced their intent to complete construction of 11th and Hill development in 2025 - a timeline which would require breaking ground by late 2022 and building the tower within a 36-month period. The project has yet to secure entitlements, including a requested Transfer of Floor Area rights and a conditional use permit to permit alcohol sales and the proposed TORS units.

The project joins a handful of similar high-rise developments slated for surrounding properties along 11th Street, including two towers planned by Mack Real Estate and a 70-story building proposed by Crescent Heights. A 60-story tower is also planned by Onni Group one block north at the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Hill Street.

Nice!
The 8th and Fig tower really covered up a hole in that part of downtown.

I always get the feeling from looking at historic pics and things like that map, that LA was like the first truly modern American city along with Detroit and Cleveland. Cities like NYC and Philly still had a lot of 19th century traits, Pittsburgh and St Louis were slummy, Dallas and Phoenix were just small towns.

LA back then seems pretty developed. People had electricity, telephones, there was an expectation of urban planning and park space, and large public schools. Plus it was among the first cities to come of age in the automobile era.

That site at 1st & Hill St is the last major gag in the Bunker Hill area...it's that area's version of the space between the 2 towers and the 7th at Fig shopping ctr.

Even before Covid hit, this proj wasn't on firm ground...but now money is getting really hard to come by....look at the uncompleted oceanwide proj! Still, I wish this devlpt would go forward....

Gehry said this new arts complex will cost $310 million. While noting the civic value, to say nothing of its enhancement of educational programs, the Colburn School acknowledged in a statement that it’s grappling with the financial impact of the present and the uncertainty of the future and that it “has decided to pause any further development of the project for an indefinite period of time.” But in a phone conversation, Colburn’s president and chief executive, Sel Kardan, said were a major donor to come along, the project could certainly be revived and that nothing is off the table in considering various public and private proposals.

Eh, I'd rather a developer comes back with a taller mixed use proposal with the school on the bottom floors or something.

Agreed, that is the perfect location for another skyscraper--especially after the Regional Connector opens.

Is the construction site at the Target garage the tallest under construction for now?

Someone really needs to buy and finish Oceanwide, for the love of God (Same for the ones in NYC and SF), though the SF one never left an ugly unfinished tower on the skyline.

Most definitely. That land is prime for a 800 footer.

Isn't the one in San Francisco a giant hole in the ground? Which is...better?
