Recopied from the [Moncton] Northwest Thread:

Here is a photo from Retail Talk & Share:

About a year ago, near the time the new Kent store opened off of Mapleton near the TCH, I posted on SSP about information that I had heard from a source stating that Irving planned to subdivide the old Kent store into several CRUs, keeping one unit for themselves so that they could serve commercial contractors.

This is obviously what is happening. This unit (on the right hand side of the building) will be for contractors only, and will not be a standard "retail" CRU open to the general public.

As for the remainder of the building, as I noted on my initial post about a year ago, only major big boxes would consider moving in here. The building is too large and too deep for smaller commercial establishments.

Noting the JYSK rumours emanating from Saint John, I could very easily see JYSK taking up a unit here. This building is a "tabula rasa" where JYSK could carve out a CRU of any size they wanted, and fit it up in any manner that they wanted. This would be ideal for them. I'm willing to predict this now........

So, this section of Wheeler Park is coming back to life (sort of). The former Costco is going to become a U-Haul storage centre, and the former Kent is going to be subdivided, with the first unit remaining as a Kent division serving commercial contractors. There should be another two CRUs in the old Kent building, probably destined for big box tenants, and my spidey senses are tingling for JYSK to be one of the tenants. This section of Wheeler Park will only be a shadow of it's former glory days with Costco & Kent, but at least it won't be populated with abandoned derelict buildings.

The name of the company (Irving owned) is Industrial Commercial Supplies, so they aren't quite finished painting the name yet.

Given the size of the banner, it would appear they are keeping at least 2/3rds of the building for themselves, not leaving too much left over for potential retail CRUs (maybe only one).

Perhaps Decathalon would be another good tenant. I can’t really thing of many other large big box store that are not already in Moncton that could fill out the rest of the building. Another question would be, would they tare down the old garden centre part and expand the building to fill that space, or just leave it alone. Ideal situation is a store opens up that could use that old space. Maybe a local spot like MacArthurs flowers opens a second location.

Perhaps. I sorta view a store like Decathlon as being somewhat upscale, and therefore probably more comfortable being associated with a development like the Granite Centre (with Costco), rather than an older, gradually senescing development like Wheeler Park.

The plans for the Granite Centre seem to include space for at least a couple of big boxes in addition to Costco.

I had recently asked a worker there, and they said, as far as they knew, "Irving was keeping it all for storage."

This could certainly be possible. As I said above, given the size of the new signage being painted on the building, this will extend for a large distance along the front facade, leaving little room for additional CRUs. Maybe Irving decided in the end to use the entire building.

There could be room for one additional CRU on the Superstore side, but I wonder how attractive it would be to potential tenants to be in a single lonely CRU adjacent to a commercial warehouse outlet.

Signage is complete:

Retail Talk & Share

Only time will tell if they cleave off a retail CRU on the left side of the building or not. I think this signage is a little offset towards the right. As such, subdivision of the building remains a possibility.

Noticed that. Also noteworthy. Glamour Secrets at CF Champlain is Now Open. And supplies arrived for Maverick hair salons.

This interesting nugget showed up on Canada Construct Connect. This is an online resource for construction professionals and contractors across Canada, similar to the CCD Canada website (which I routinely check).

Quote:
Entertainment

Moncton, Westmorland County, New Brunswick ConstructConnect Project ID: 1006080406

Project Particulars:

Stage: Pre-Design
Start Date: Aug 2024
Funding: Private
Value: $25,000,000
Work Type: Addition/Alteration Building Type: RETAIL
https://canada.constructconnect.com/...8-6B455D3A6F21

$25M is nothing to sneeze at. This would be a major private capital project in the retail/entertainment sector, and is listed as an "addition/alteration"

This sort of information will lead to some very interesting speculation as to what it could possibly mean. Could it mean a Playdium addition to CF Champlain? Could it mean an IMAX expansion for one of our two cinema complexes? Interesting thoughts. Any other ideas out there???

FWIW, the Cineplex at Wheeler Park is badly in need of a refresh. I could see this movie theatre complex being gutted and completely refurbished, including with an IMAX theatre quite easily. Hell, they could throw in a Playdium out there too if they expanded their footprint.

Another thought could be a complete renovation and expansion of the old Cabela's on Mapleton Road. There's lots of room out there for a large entertainment complex. Given the current facade of the building, something like a Great Wolf Lodge (like in Niagara Falls) could be possible.

$25 million would be a major project. Everything you've mentioned could be a possibility, but any thoughts about downtown? When I think about the core, residential is the first thing that comes to my mind.

A multi-million dollar attraction downtown would certainly be a big deal though.

They’re expanding the dollarama and adding a Tim Hortons to it haha. In all seriousness all of your suggestions have been good ones. I’m curious now.

Maybe it’s the addition to the Crowne plaza? Probably not, but who knows.

It's a thought. This project is unrelated to the presumed Baton Rouge restaurant, but, there is still the old bus station next door, and the parking lot in behind which could be used for a significant development.

I was thinking about that block too. It does say addition/alteration, so that would line up. A $25 million investment by Aquilini on that property would be a game changer. Like MonctonRad mentioned, there's lots of land there to work with. Personally, I'd love to see it! Maybe it would light a fire under Crombie to finally do something with 1222 Main St.

Bath and Bodyworks at CF Champlain is apparently reopening in their renovated former storefront on December 10th.

If Cineplex at Wheeler parks needs reno, why not open new IMAX Cineplex in the old Costco location. $25 million would cover it.

That would free up the old Cineplex area to more retailers.

Except Uhaul already owns it 😂 I think the old Cabela's would be a cool covert to an Imax or Playdium though
