Two highlights of the recently passed $4.8 Billion Infrastructure Bill that the Michigan Legislature passed.

Quote:
Joe Louis Greenway
The bill contains a $60 million grant for Detroit to develop and build the Joe Louis Greenway, a 29-mile-long walking and biking trail throughout the city that will connect neighborhoods to the riverfront.
Quote:
Transit center
There's $10 million for MDOT's development of an intermodal transit center on Woodward Avenue in Detroit's New Center neighborhood for buses and passenger trains to replace the city's aging Amtrak station.

Detroit makes $45M investment in neighborhood rec centers

Quote:
Recreation centers around the city are about to get some major upgrades. As part of Detroit's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, the city is investing $45 million into renovating, expanding, and reopening a dozen rec centers.

$30 million will be coming from ARPA, $10 million from city bonds, and $5 million from Roger Penske.

The rec center at Dexter-Elmhurst will be demolished and rebuilt (see first before/after slider below). The $8.5 million project will include indoor sports facilities, a kitchen for events, and community space. It should be completed in 2024.

Chandler Park will see a dome-covered football field added, along with indoor sports center. Construction should start in 2023. Lenox Community Center, also on the city's east side, will become solar-powered. Roger Penske is funding this upgraded rec center as part of the city's Strategic Neighborhood Fund in Jefferson Chalmers. (see last below/after slider)
An expansion at Farwell, with a new gym, lockers, and walking path. Construction should start in spring 2023.
The State Fair Band Shell relocation to Palmer Park. The $10 million city bond-funded improvements will also go toward this project. Construction will happen this year.
The renovation at Adams Butzel will be completed this year, with a roof replacement, HVAC, pool, and locker upgrades.
The Coleman Young rec center will continue renovations to common spaces like the lobby, restrooms, and kitchen and should be completed this summer.
The Butzel Family Rec Center is currently undergoing exterior and interior updates, and will be done next month.
Heilmann has undergone renovations and improvements to the lobby, restrooms, and other areas. This renovation has been completed.
The Patton Rec Center has undergone improvements to its pool and gym, as well as HVAC upgrades. This renovation has been completed.
Crowell will also see interior renovations and landscaping done by next month.
Clemente is undergoing renovations and landscaping and should be done this spring.

Looks like we finally have something coming for 1300 Broadway called Peach Cobbler Factory (seems like Downtown Detroit has been getting a lot of sweets lately). Do wish them luck since that area is pretty rough considering most (if not not all) of the south side of Broadway is vacant.

I found this little nugget about the Joe Louis Arena site in an article about if Detroit has enough hotel rooms for the NFL draft.

Quote:
"We're working with the developers of that site to build a 750-room, upper-upscale hotel on the southwest corner of the building, and we'd look to secure a developer — or perhaps even entertain building it ourselves — for an upper-upscale hotel on the northwest corner of the convention center," Molinari said.

The northwest portion is land controlled by the convention facility authority, Molinari said, and that to extend Second Avenue to the Detroit River and build the hotel, Detroit City Council and state legislative approvals are needed.

Looks like they broke ground on the UA Building. Saw some tents outside this morning and was wondering what it was for.

And apparently, they are continuing the lie that HUD is requiring them to demolish the theater.

Quote:
The movie theater itself, designed by famous theater architect C. Howard Crane, is said to be in poor physical shape and will be demolished as part of the redevelopment, with its footprint becoming surface parking for future residents.

Moten told reporters Thursday that demolition of the theater — a sore point for local preservation activists — was a requirement from HUD for the project to get a federally backed mortgage.

“They said they would not attach a piece of property to their investment," Moten said.

However, Michael Polsinelli, a HUD field office director who attended the event, insisted that HUD didn't mandate that the old theater come down.

“HUD did not require it," Polsinelli said. "That was part of the proposal that was brought in to us. I don’t even recall why that had to be developed to be honest with you ... but we did not require it. That (question) came up earlier, and we had to set the record straight.”

Black-owned Detroit Pizza Bar opens in long-abandoned building

Quote:
A new pizza spot is getting ready to open in a long-abandoned commercial building on McNichols Road.

The Detroit Pizza Bar will open for a soft opening from 5-9 p.m. on Friday. The restaurant plans to officially open for business on Friday, April 8, according to a press release.

The $1.3 million Black-owned restaurant was opened with funding from the Strategic Neighborhood Fund, a public-private partnership aimed at improving 10 neighborhoods throughout Detroit.

Has there been any construction updates on the buildings surrounding Little Caesars Arena that were supposed to be included with "District Detroit"? Like Hotel Eddystone and the Alhambra hotel?

from Dec 2021

Quote:
Eddystone: The Eddystone has been completed on schedule, leasing is underway and new residents have started moving in as of December 1, 2021, offering 92 residential units, twenty percent of which are reserved as affordable housing. The local team from Four Man Ladder, operators of Detroit favorites Grey Ghost and Second Best, will operate the Eddystone’s ground-floor restaurant, Basan.

2715 Woodward: Earlier this year, the state-of-the-art, new-construction building located at 2715 Woodward Ave., between Little Caesars Arena and the Mike Ilitch School of Business opened. Olympia Development was pleased to welcome tenants Warner Norcross + Judd LLP and Boston Consulting Group to The District Detroit as both organizations have moved into their office spaces in 2021.

Women’s City Club: Work is nearing completion on the revitalization of the historic Women’s City Club building, which will become a hub for small businesses and entrepreneurs, creating jobs and bringing increased density to the Park Avenue Historic District. The building will include 46,000 square feet of office space, including new occupant, Spaces – an open, shared office concept from IWC plc – and 12,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

Henry Street redevelopment: Olympia Development partnered with Cinnaire Solutions to explore the revitalization of seven, 1920s-era historic buildings on a single city block bounded by Henry Street, Cass Avenue, 2nd Street, and the I-75 service drive. The proposed redevelopment will help to energize the local economy and support the city’s neighborhood revitalization strategy, while providing green spaces and the creation of construction and permanent jobs for Detroiters. Planning work is actively underway, and the project earned LIHTC support earlier this year. In addition, Olympia Development, Cinnaire Solutions, and Detroit Public Schools partnered with Project Destined to offer a real estate internship program for Detroit kids, during which students focused on the Henry Street redevelopment.

Columbia Street: This pedestrian-friendly dining and retail destination continues to grow as more small businesses move in. This year, local independently-owned Union Assembly and Eminem’s Mom’s Spaghetti opened in the ground floor of the Little Caesars World Headquarters – the first major headquarters built in Detroit in more than a decade – joining Frita Batidos and M Den on Columbia Street. Columbia Street has hosted a variety of District Detroit free events including Workouts featuring Pilates and HIIT training classes, the popular Art Walks series highlighting the work of Detroit-area artists and Acoustic Nights headlining local bands. In 2022 The District Detroit looks forward to returning many events to Columbia Street and introducing several new ones.

Found this while looking for an update on the Ralph C Wilson Park development which was supposed to have broken ground last fall. Fortunately we have a May 10th date set for groundbreaking .. The Michael Van Valkenburgh designed project is one I had been really looking forward to enjoying about however it looks like they’ve been design changes such as the beach being replaced with a “water garden” and the removal of evergreen isle.

I haven’t heard anything official or much about the project at all but I’ve seen changing renderings over time which usually isn’t a good sign. Not sure if worries about strong currents caused the change I saw a underwater reef in some of the newer designs before the water garden feature appeared.

Edit; upon closer inspection it does look like the cove has been replaced with a interior lake feature called the water garden according to the Huron - Clinton Metro Parks page.

Some pics n renderings of the sw greenway too.

Riverfront extension will connect to Michigan Central, residential neighborhoods

The $8 million Southwest Greenway will connect the riverfront and planned Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park with the rail station and neighborhoods throughout southwest Detroit, Mexicantown and Corktown, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy announced in a press release.

The Conservancy will break ground on the connected Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park, a 22-acre endeavor on the West Riverfront, on May 10, with the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation having committed $50 million toward the project in 2018.

Allegedly, the founder of Studio 54 has signed on to be the hotel operator for the Hudson's site...

Quote:
Dan Gilbert's skyscraper on the site of the former J.L. Hudson's department store downtown is getting an Edition hotel.

A source familiar with the matter said the luxury brand by Ian Schrager, a cofounder of nightclub Studio 54 in New York City, signed an agreement late last year to be the hotel flag in the long under-construction tower at the corner of Woodward and Grand River avenues.

The number of rooms spelled out in the agreement is not known, but the most recent publicly available development plan on the project's website calls for 227.

An announcement could come within the next few weeks.
