Oh wow, not one but two prominent buildings on Bourbon St to be renovated!! Actually, it's really three when you add Gayle Benson having bought Chris Owen's building. Very happy to see.

Do we know what's taking over the Boost Mobile store on Canal St? I really would love to see--a boy can dream--French Truck Coffee take over the Starbucks on Canal and St. Charles.

I feel like Canal Street is its only little world when it comes to downtown. It needs lots of help to become a place people want to go to. especially the middle section

You just posted on your blog approximately 25 projects on Bourbon St (which is amazing). Did something happen that I missed? That's an impressive list of works in the pipeline that will dramatically clean up Bourbon St.

I would imagine the intense roadwork in the Quarter had held up some projects that are now going forward. But maybe it also spurred some developers to be willing to invest?

Developers make pitch for retirement complex, hotel on former Copeland land at Mandeville lakefront

Curing cancer and capitalizing on the surge of retiring baby boomers sound like great selling points. At least Matt Altier, president and CEO of LSU Health Foundation must have thought so as he stood before a crowd of about 100 Mandeville residents to talk about a proposed development on Mandeville's lakefront that aims to do both.

Altier asked audience members at the Mandeville Planning and Zoning Commission meeting this week to raise their hands if they were 58 or older and to do so again if they or anyone in their life has dealt with cancer. Not surprisingly, many hands went up both times.

But those hands in the air are no guarantee that development-averse Mandeville residents will support Sucette Harbor, a retirement community the LSU Health Foundation has proposed for part of 29 acres of lakefront property donated by the family of Al Copeland.

A luxury retirement community
The meeting at the Paul Spitzfaden Community Center Wednesday night provided the first public review of the $125-$150 million project, which developers described as a luxury retirement community with 201 apartments for adults 55 and older, an 82-room boutique hotel, an events center, restaurants and a marina with 103 boat slips and easy access to Lake Pontchartrain.

Woodward Interests, the developer, is leasing the land from the LSU Health Foundation, and 60% of the revenue from the lease is committed to cancer research with the other 40% going mainly to student scholarships, Altier said....

UNO marching forward with campaign to add football: 'It could be transformational'

https://www.nola.com/sports/article_...3f1371593.html

Tim Duncan has a bold vision for the University of New Orleans.

He sees a day in the near future when thousands of students and fans commune in an open-air, on-campus stadium along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain to watch the Privateers play Division I football.

UNO’s fourth-year athletic director is convinced the sport can be a catalyst for UNO. Not just for the athletic program but for the entire student experience at the school, which has served as New Orleans’

“We think we have something special brewing on the lakefront,” Duncan said.

That something special includes the proposed addition of a Division I football program.

During his State of the Privateers address to boosters and athletic department staff on Thursday night, Duncan updated his proposed plan to add football, women’s golf, women’s soccer and marching band to the school’s athletic department.

The plan could become a reality if UNO students approve an increase in student fees during a voting referendum Nov. 9. The proposed increase to a $300 flat fee for part-time students and $400 for full-time students is required to fund the estimated $4 million to $5 million annual expense needed to add the four programs....

Children’s Hospital New Orleans to Build ‘Walker’s Imaginarium’

Children’s Hospital New Orleans and nonprofit group Kids Join the Fight have announced plans to build a 12,000-square-foot enrichment center located on the hospital’s main campus. The center will be named ‘Walker’s Imaginarium’ in memory of Walker Beery, who launched Kids Join the Fight before succumbing to pediatric brain cancer in September 2021.

The estimated $10 million project will provide a therapeutic space for patients and families to “thrive, find joy and enjoy time together while in the hospital,” said a hospital spokesperson. Officials hope to break ground on the 18-month construction project starting by the end of 2023.

Ochsner Health Receives Gift to Build State-of-the-Art Neuroscience Center

Ochsner Health has received a gift that will establish its state-of-the art, freestanding neuroscience center to be built on Jefferson Highway near Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans. Once complete, the 132,000-square-foot center will be a comprehensive destination of neurological care for patients that will include an innovation center, integrative and aquatic therapies, and a neurological rehabilitation center. The donation of an undisclosed amount comes from long-time Ochsner supporters Robert J. and Debra H. Patrick. Hospital officials hope to break ground on the project in early 2023 and to be finished by 2025.

New owner of Riverwalk outlets announces first tenant

Luxury retailer Karl Lagerfeld Paris is opening at The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, its first store in Louisiana and the first tenant announced since the shopping center in downtown New Orleans was acquired by a Texas firm this summer.

Rockstep Capital president Andy Weiner said in August that his company is negotiating with three other luxury-brand tenants, and his goal is for the mall to be fully occupied in 24 to 36 months.

The company also plans to upgrade the adjacent Spanish Plaza to add food and entertainment, he said.
