Some Winnipeg news

Winnipeg: Polar bear capital in the making?
Last Updated: Thursday, December 14, 2006 | 3:43 PM CT
CBC News

The city already known as Winnie the Pooh's hometown has earned another "beary" special distinction: Polar Bears International is moving its global headquarters to Winnipeg.

The non-profit organization, which dedicates itself to the conservation of polar bears, was founded in 1992 by Canadian wildlife photographer Dan Guravich.

The organization's website currently lists a California address, but much of its operations so far have been virtual. Some of its programs include conservation-themed leadership camps and a polar bear webcam in Churchill — the one town where the bears actually do roam.

When PBI comes to Winnipeg, its offices will initially be located beside the Partners in the Park office in Assiniboine Park.

"Given that this organization has been primarily virtual, the costs are going to be minimal as far as office," Irene Merie, executive director of Partners in the Park, said Thursday.

Polar Bear International's presence in the park could bring "tremendous tourism opportunities" to the city, Merie said.
"People coming through to Churchill need to stop in Winnipeg, and we can hopefully tie in some programming that will give them a reason to stay in Winnipeg for a while," she said.

"But moreover, there's going to be lots of research activity. And what our intention is to do is to work with Polar Bears International to create a state-of-the-art polar bear education centre where there will be live broadcasts and education, basically broadcast around the world from Winnipeg."

Premier Gary Doer said Wednesday the province would match $75,000 in private funding that will be donated to Polar Bears International for the move.

OTTAWA, Dec. 15 /CNW/ - The Canadian Sport Awards (CSA) presented by
Investors Group, the annual recognition event for achievement in Canadian
sport, will partner with Sport Manitoba, the University of Manitoba and
Destination Winnipeg to host a revamped, community-oriented celebration of
sporting excellence in Winnipeg March 23 and 24, 2007. Winnipeg won the
opportunity through a bid process which included a number of other cities.
"Winnipeg, a great city in the heart of Canada, demonstrated in its bid a
creative, enthusiastic and people-centred approach," said Victor Lachance,
Chairperson of the True Sport Foundation which operates the event. "Given its track record of success as host of a number of other high-profile sporting
events like the recent Grey Cup, the 1999 Pan American Games, the 1999 World
Junior Hockey Championships and the 2000 Canadian Figure Skating
Championships, we are certain they will do justice to our new format and set
the bar for future hosts."
Traditionally held as a semi-formal affair, this 34-year-old tradition
will now be opened more broadly and will involve a series of interactive
experiences to engage the public in recognizing and supporting Canada's top
level athletes.
"Investors Group is proud to once again support Canada's leading
athletes, coaches and volunteers in sport," said Richard Irish, Assistant
Vice-President, Community Affairs and Area Marketing, Investors Group. "It
means even more this year as Winnipeg is the corporate home for Investors
Group and the event will take place in the Investors Group Athletic Centre at
the University of Manitoba."
The two day event will be co-managed by The True Sport Foundation and
Sport Manitoba. Sport Manitoba will also use this opportunity to celebrate the
Manitoba Sport Awards in concert with the national awards. The Sport and
Active Living Centre at the University of Manitoba will throw open its doors
to host the event. Destination Winnipeg will provide resources and services
support to help make it all a successful and meaningful experience.
"Sport Manitoba is honoured and excited to play a role in paying tribute
to Canada's premier athletes, their outstanding achievements and at the same
time recognize Manitoba's best young athletes on the national stage," said
Jeff Hnatiuk, President and CEO, Sport Manitoba. "We look forward to engaging
the entire community in being a part of a sport festival and celebration of
amateur sport in Canada."
The new format will cater to the grassroots level with a series of
interactive events, such as: a breakfast with athletes and coaches, a
community barbeque and an open house at the University of Manitoba's Sport and
Active Living Centre in which award-winning athletes will host workshops and
demonstrations for sport enthusiasts. These events will be supported
throughout by a variety of contests, mini games, celebrity competitions,
prizes and sponsorship opportunities.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS:

On December 1st, The True Sport Foundation announced its call for

Finalists for each CSA award will be announced in February 2007. Winners
will be announced at the official awards ceremony in Winnipeg at the end of

Spoken like a true bumpkin, Adrian!

There are a few places in Thunder Bay that don't have high speed. It's their fault for living on unnamed streets in the bush, though.

my parents have satellite internet with I-net.

Quote:
The network operates through radio frequencies from towers which communicate through line of site. These towers are networked and receive a signal from a fiber connection in Brandon. Each tower extends from 100’-150’ covering up to a 15 km radius.
Coverage area

Line of sight works well in flat terrain.

but yeah, good job on the Polar Bear thing!

Bringing this thread back to life!!

Where I live, MTS doesn't supply high-speed here (north of Beasuejour). One company we have is called 'Crow "something"' which cost like $47.60 a month.

Would you supply high speed service to a sparsely populated area where very few people would even be interested in paying for the service? Last time I checked MTS was a private company that tried to make a profit!

Even TBayTel, a city owned company, doesn't serve many places with too few people. And if they do, you have to help pay for the line to be set up. The city would like to have everyone in the city limits to get cable and ADSL, but they understand that realistically, it's impossible. Wireless internet on the other hand, would be worth looking into.

Actually Beausejour and Lac Du Bonnet have high speed internet (not sure if it is MTS). I live in the between of those two towns. Beausejour has almost 3,000 people. Beasuejour and Brokenhead almost have a population of 7,000 together. Not sure how many people live in Lac Du Bonnet.

If you're granted a monopoly on service, inherit decades of taxpayer-funded infrastructure (all those utility right-of-ways don't just build themselves), and are basically the only shop in town - then yes, yes you should.

Regardless, they made a promise to do this way back when - can't remember if it was before the privitization, which would explain the lack of progress.
