Vancouver FC is really leaning into the "VFC" identity...somebody should tell them there already is one

Kidding aside, I like their look.

Canada announces squad for away camp in Bahrain ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
canadasoccer.com November 02, 2022

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team have announced their squad for a November camp in Bahrain that will feature an international friendly test ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. The week-long camp and Friday 11 November friendly in Bahrain represents Canada’s last get together before the Men’s National Team moves into Qatar. Ahead of their opening group stage match at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ on 23 November against Belgium, Canada will also travel to Dubai for a friendly match against Japan.

As the camp falls just outside the official window, the Bahrain camp will predominantly feature players from out-of-season Major League Soccer. The camp provides Canada with an opportunity to acclimatise to the heat and weather conditions in the middle east while also taking part in another important international test against an opponent from outside Concacaf.

The away match in Bahrain will be played at the Al-Khalifa Stadium (18.30 local) less than two weeks before Canada’s opening match at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. It will also be Canada’s last international test before the full squad gets together when the official international window opens for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

CANADA SQUAD

Canadas three goalkeepers for the camp are Maxime Crépeau from Los Angeles FC, James Pantemis from CF Montréal, and Dayne St. Clair from Minnesota United FC. All three goalkeepers featured in the MLS playoffs, with notably Crépeau prepared to compete in the MLS Cup Final on Sunday 5 November.

Along with Pantemis, other CF Montréal players in the Canada lineup are Zachary Brault-Guillard, Mathieu Choinière, Alistair Johnston, Ismaël Koné, Kamal Miller, Samuel Piette and Joel Waterman. The eight Montréal players, who helped the club set a team record for MLS minutes by Canadians in 2022, reached the Quarter-Finals of the MLS playoffs.

Other Canadians in the squad are Liam Fraser from KMSK Deinze in Belgium, Raheem Edwards from Los Angeles Galaxy, Jacob Shaffelburg from Nashville SC, Lucas Cavallini from Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and Ayo Akinola, Doneil Henry, Mark-Anthony Kaye, Richie Laryea, Lukas MacNaughton, Jayden Nelson and Jonathan Osorio from Toronto FC. For MacNaughton, who completed his first season in Major League Soccer in 2022, this marks his first-ever call up to the Men’s National Team.

CANADA SOCCER’S MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team are the reigning Kings of Concacaf, having finished first overall in the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers from September 2021 to March 2022. It marked the third time that Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team won a Concacaf title, having previously won the 1985 Concacaf Championship and the 2000 Concacaf Gold Cup. Canada now look forward to their second participation at the men’s FIFA World Cup™ with group matches against Belgium on 23 November, Croatia on 27 November, and Morocco on 1 December.

The Voyageurs Cup will feature a record 15 teams in 2023 now that L1BC champions (TSS Rovers) have been admitted for 2023. FC Edmonton is a tossup at this point given the status of that team, but growth continues to be seen across Canada for professional and semi-professional clubs.

Bad news, hopefully not too serious. Scott Kennedy is already out of the WC with a shoulder injury.

More bad news. Maxime Crepeau saves the game in OT for LAFC in the MLS Cup as he goes out to get a brutal backpass and suffers a possible broken leg. The injury perhaps so horrific that they wouldn't show the replay. He was cheering on his teammates as he was taken off the field on a cart.

The Philadelphia Union later go on to score and with minutes left so does LAFC to tie the game. Goes to PKs.

Terrible loss on all accounts for Crepeau. LAFC wins on PKs, at least Crepeau goes out a champ.

That MLS final has to be one of the greatest games of all time. And the Phillies lost their title on the same day. We'll see if the Eagles, who have the best record now, make it to the SB.

It is indeed quite a shame to miss the WC, but winning a title softens the blow.

Really hope not, I know clubs often fold in leagues early but that would be a huge shame to lose Edmonton so early already - they're the oldest franchise identity in the league IIRC

Canada Soccer announces squad for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™
Men's National Team canadasoccer.com November 12, 2022

Canada Soccer have announced the official squad that will represent the nation at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. Led by Head Coach John Herdman, Canada’s brotherhood of 26 players have united the country from coast to coast on their quest for Qatar and are set to inspire a nation on the world’s biggest stage. Following a 20-match run that qualified the Men’s National Team to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 36 years, Canada will now continue their pioneering journey when they take to the pitch for their opening match on Wednesday 23 November at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.

After an opening match against Belgium, Canada will face Croatia four days later on Sunday 27 November at Khalifa International Stadium and then Morocco another four days later on Thursday 1 December at Al Thumama Stadium to close out the group phase. In Canada, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ will be broadcast live across CTV, TSN and RDS from 20 November through 18 December, with the knockout phase starting Saturday 3 December. Complete coverage of Canada Soccer’s FIFA World Cup journey will be published at CanadaSoccer.com and across our digital channels.

To support and inspire Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team, the #WeCAN campaign encourages Canadians to post a video featuring the words ‘We Can’ along with at least one reason why they believe in Canada’s quest at Qatar 2022. At the same time, fans are encouraged to follow Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube to find extended coverage featuring the hashtag #CANMNT.

Across FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Canada posted 14 wins, four draws and just two losses over three rounds as they became the first nation from the region to qualify for Qatar with a 4:0 home win on 27 March 2022 in Toronto. Canada scored a Men’s National Team record 54 goals across the cycle while Cyle Larin set the Canadian record for goals (13), Alphonso Davies set the Canadian record for assists (eight), and Milan Borjan set the Canadian record for clean sheets (nine). Of note, both Larin (13) and Jonathan David (nine) were the top-two goalscorers across all Concacaf nations in 2021-22 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Throughout the qualifying campaign, Canada set numerous team and individual records, also setting a Concacaf record for the longest undefeated streak in a FIFA World Cup Qualifiers campaign. Canada set their own Men’s National Team records for consecutive wins (eight) and longest home undefeated streak (14 matches). In all, 39 different players represented Canada across FIFA World Cup Qualifiers from March 2021 through March 2022.

Canada (FIFA 41/Elo 29) beats Japan (FIFA 24/Elo 27) 2-1 on a 92+ minute cheeky penalty kick by Lucas Cavallini after Richie Laryea was taken down in the box. Well deserved victory by Canada who dominated shots, possession and corner kicks against a highly regarded Japan side that was just coming off a 2-0 victory over the USA two months ago.

It was good to see almost every player being much improved from their latest Canada efforts. The team also was without their two most influential players, Davies and Eustaquio.

Neither goalie was really threatened in the game aside from the goals. Japan hit the post late in the game before the Canada PK almost breaking Canadian hearts but Canada hung on and later got the PK.

Could not have been a better result for Canada as they played well but still have room for improvement.

Serie A's Bologna FC (also owned by CF Montreal's Joey Saputo) is reportedly looking at CFM's Alistair Johnston for a January or summer transfer.

Let's GO BOYS!

Shirt, cap ready to roll and off to the local soccer viewing party late morning.

Here's hoping we can make it interesting with Belgium.

I'm going with 2-2 FT.

Morocco and Croatia tied 0-0. Seems like the hot weather countries are faring quite well so far.

Japan beats Japan. So far, this would be one of the weirdest knockout rounds ever.

Go Canada!

FYP And Canada beat Japan last week. BTW the stadiums are supposed to be air conditioned and players were actually told to bring a blanket.
