The Assembly Detroit

The Assembly Garage is more than meets the eye this low key but interesting mixed used component of Fords Corktown Camps has been completed relatively recently. “ Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, Bedrock in Detroit, and Bosch in Farmington Hills are working with the State of Michigan to launch the nation’s first-of-its-kind, real-world test site for emerging parking technology — called the Detroit Smart Parking Lab”

Former UAW Center is one of the most prime properties in the city Gilbert just snatched it up. I remember a few years back a new conceptual plan for E. Jefferson with high rise development being promoted along Jefferson, mid rises in between Jeff and the water which would be low rise as have relatively obstructed views of the water.

There’s been rumbling for years about a GM - Gilbert riverfront project perhaps this is a one off purchase of prime real estate but I’ll definitely be watching for more.

Here’s a pic of the Godfrey Hotel under construction in Corktown it’s a month or two old now but it gives a good view of the progress from the surrounding neighborhood.

BVK Group - https://bkvgroup.com/blog/

City Club Apartments has been controversial from the get go while it matches height of the low - mid rises of Washington Blvd its key spot on GCP replacing the Statler really called for something several floors taller.

BDC Design Construction - https://www.bdcnetwork.com/first-new...30-years-opens

On the flip side it’s bringing more residents to the neglected west end of GCP. Not the most attractive structure either however we’re seeing the long abandoned UA Building renovation commence. With the completion of the Park Ave Building around the corner GCP is becoming an exciting area to watch especially with the Stephen Ross - U of M development planned on Grand River just a few blocks away.

MCD facade looking nice and clean the chance in contrast helps highlight the vibrancy of Vernor Ave ‘n SW in general. The Book Depository and Huntington Tower can also be seen in various stages of completion.

Higher quality infill is a match for Detroit style housing and is a nice way to blend the century old neighborhood with the mellenium era suburbanesq transplant.

Couple cool but unfortunately small pics for a small update

Pure Michigan

Prentis st areal. This section of midtown is one my top picks for skyline views due to half finished outward spoking nature of core downtown streets the southward view gives a better impression. The midtown urban landscape overlaying the wider showing of the skyline is a impression of Detroit not often seen.

Those are a couple of beaut’s subterranean especially that one of the Book. The way the lighting from the sun set hits and lights up the lower floors but leaves the crown in dusk very striking.

Thank you Subterranean I needed that fix.

Bit of trivia and musing. Not sure if you guys have heard the kind of reception the Book received from critics at the time but Louis Kamper was derided as a baker for all the extreme amount detail on that beauty. I believe the notion was the building is nothing special he just used excessive icing to decorate a plain cake.

Seems like blue blooded snobbery to me against a young up and coming architect. The only faults in the building the south side fire escape added last minute would have been obscured mostly by the 80 story south tower. While the best face of the building is partially obscured when Trolly Plaza was built. It still baffles me how the building got so dirty I’ve heard theory about the stone color but imo the limestone being porous absorbed smoke from the coal fired boilers in the Statler for 50 years at a greater rate when moist.

The Book Tower renovation is truly one of the greatest Art Deco revivals ever the Book-Cadillac was seen by most as a beautiful but degraded building but few saw the same potential in the Book.

Speaking of revitalizing gems here’s a view of the results of the Blue Heron Lagoon restoration project the small culverts were replaced with a breach where the bridge stands. The change in water quality is amazing not only in the lagoon but downstream in Lake Okonoka going from tea colored to turquoise. It’s even more stark when looked on from above in Google Earth.
