Cigs, ash holder and even a drawer for your matches.

Reminds me of a great and underappreciated Chevrolet accessory of the late '50s... the Flame Out vacuum ashtray. Just tap your ashes into the little chrome funnel mounted under the dash and woosh--your ashes are collected in a glass bottle under the hood (or maybe somewhere else under the dash) for later disposal. (Just what a car of the '50s needed...another potential manifold vacuum leak..and I know if was near one when I was a kid, all sorts of things would have wound up in that jar.)

A little LA context (though the Flame Out had flamed out of the accessory catalog by 1964)...

Tugboats were used to pull it over during the final demo.

'mystery' location

"Fox Market Grocery Store Supermarket in Los Angeles Area, 1950s"

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Sli...UAAOSw9GhYa8p-

After several attempts, I haven't been able to figure out the location of this Kodachrome slide.

During my search, I happened upon this black & white photograph of the Fox Market in Van Nuys. [c.1960]

https://hereinvannuys.me/2016/07/22/...bl-circa-1960/

Do you think this Carl Maston designed Fox Market replaced the older market shown in the vintage Kodachrome?

Hudson's "The Electric Hand" (Slightly ahead of the Tiptronic/Sportomatic)

The '35 Hudson had a new feature that evidently had a hand operated clutch (solenoid activated). This might free up that left foot for more important functions, like holding a cigarette.

Shame that this one was left to the elements as part of a Griffith Park Bike Rentals sign. (3171 Los Feliz?)

The longer I look at it, the more I think this is somewhere other than Los Angeles.

note the interesting old house on the far right (detail below)

& lots of TV aerials

Cannery Row, Monterey

The white building shown above with the Asian design influence is the Bear Flag Building (1929) and is still there, but now painted red.

GSV

Some features of the 1950s image are still there.

GSV

And a peek down the alley shows the parts of the bullding that are the same as they were in the 1950s

GSV - goo.gl/77gAvX

The street (row) has changed considerably, but the larger warehouse next door is still there.

Unfortunately, the house in e_r's detail is now gone. (Perhaps moved?)

And a hearty congratulations on 2000 pages!!!!

I'm a newbie here, but in the past month or so I have enjoyed more than 700 pages and am completely hooked! Great work everyone!

Thanks for your research Dinkler. I noticed that round sign in the vintage slide....pleasantly surprised to see it's still there.
It's always interesting to see what has survived and what hasn't.

And thanks to Hoss as well.

Here's another awesome 1950s Kodachrome slide currently on ebay.

As a reminder, the large building is the San Pedro Municipal Building located at 638 .S. Beacon Street. The top floor was the San Pedro jail.

Wow! 2000 pages and 5 short of 40,000 posts...congrats to posters and lurkers and especially to e_r.

In celebration of Presidents' Day here is:

UCLA Special Collections

The caption is "Elephants from Cole Brothers Circus crossing Olive Street with police escort in Los Angeles, Calif., 1953." I think this is Olive and Fourth:

GSV

...which would make the structure on the east side of Olive up from the Center Garage the Wales Apartments at 344 S. Olive, built in 1896 as the Bailey Building and demolished in 1963. The structure on the sec is still a garage, albeit without the "shady roof parking" and the 60 cent/day parking rates.

Not to throw cold water on your story, but... people take loaded guns onto pier and start shooting at each other, but not to kill?, the bullets go where? straight into venice and I doubt they'd appreciate that. Good story but if it happened it was probably police training with blanks

Congratulations and thanks to everyone for getting this thread to 2000 pages. The cross section of members we have always keeps the subject matter fresh and interesting. Sorry I didn't have time to make a celebratory graphic for the occasion.

------------------

Today's Julius Shulman post takes us back to school. It's "Job 520: Ralph Flewelling, Warren Lane School (Inglewood, Calif.), 1949". I've trimmed the set down from thirteen images to seven.

The vegetation on this side still looks very new.

An open, paved area.

The covered walkways link the otherwise detached classrooms. Each of these has the same semi-circular roof over the entrance.

A fairly non-descript corridor.

I think this is a classroom. The lights seem to match those in the corridor above.

The blackboards mean that this is definitely a classroom.

All from Getty Research Institute

The buildings are still standing at 9330 S 8th Avenue, Inglewood, but a sign on the corner (which is at least a couple of years old) says "Warren Lane moved to 2602 W 9th Street". I think it's now used as a special education school. I've gone for an overhead "now" view.

The Bear Flag Restaurant is the local whorehouse in Steinbeck's CANNERY ROW and SWEET THURSDAY.

"1960s VENICE BEACH CALIFORNIA pretty girls beauty pageant - photo from original 35mm slide"

ebay

I've been trying to identify the building in the background but haven't had any luck.

Does it look familiar to anyone?
