Why the drastic design change? I was hoping for the curved and overlapping facade.

Yeah, no change from the sloped design. Even the number of floors is the same. I'm not sure where they made the changes, but there were minimal changes in height.

UT put out a request for proposals to redevelop it. There were at least 3 different proposals all with different designs and scale.

I was hoping they'd go with the taller proposal just because of the height, but the design was good also. I'm happy with the one they went with. This is going to be a bit of a different type of tower for Austin from we have already. This tower will be located in one of the highest spots in downtown, so it's going to stand out, even with 6th & Guadalupe being just two blocks to the west.

Seems awfully persnickety to flag the project over 13 feet.

Sometimes I wonder if the FAA are a bunch of control freaks.

Excavation has started. They're probably still digging out the stubborn bits from the Ashbel Smith Hall's foundation. This photo is from around 2 weeks ago.

Also, one of the two tower cranes was constructed last weekend. Here it is here, the red crane in front of the One American Center. Once the building tops out, the crane will reach 754 feet, according to an FAA permit.
